I almost became the American lead in an Indian film in the 1980s.
Instead, I got telegram delays, curry lessons, and bridal bed bribery from Bombay.

What’s the difference between mentorship and manipulation when you’re nineteen and trying to make it?
I thought I was being discovered.
What I was really learning was how power introduces itself in Hollywood.
The men who offered mentorship were often just better dressed versions of the men I was trying to avoid. Follow HOLLYWOODN’T on Substack link in my bio #chuckbinder #warrenbeatty #hollywoodstories by @hollywoodnt_

I never intended to write erotica.
I intended on becoming an actress.
Unfortunately, in Hollywood, those storylines occasionally overlap. Follow my memoir HOLLYWOODN’T on Substack link in my bio. @substack @hollywoodnt_ by @hollywoodnt_

I came to Hollywood looking for a mentor.
Apparently, I started with extracurriculars.
Some people get auditions.
I got orgasms, gynecologist referrals, and a master class in Hollywood power dynamics.

At nineteen, I believed being chosen by Warren Beatty meant I was on my way. I thought I was being invited in; I didn’t yet understand what that meant. I knew enough to be flattered, but not enough to be careful.

When a powerful man calls, they don’t teach you how to say no. They teach you how to justify saying yes.
My acting teacher told me to go to his house.
Because that’s how it works.
Or at least… how it worked out.
“You’ve done it for less.”
That was the advice.
Tell me… what would you have done? #leestrasberginstitute #hedysontag #warrenbeatty @strasberginstitute #youvedoneitforless #castingcouchstories follow my HOLLYWOODN’T memoir on @substack link in bio taken in The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute - Los Angeles by @hollywoodnt_

I didn’t always know what was being auditioned. Somewhere along the way, smiling stopped being joy and started being strategy.
I played along long enough to assess the likely outcomes, smiling while deciding whether it was time to leave. That was my early Hollywood training. @hollywoodnt_ @substack @strasberginstitute #hollywoodstories #thecastingcouch #warrenbeatty #hedysontag #marcmarno by @hollywoodnt_

I once turned down a photo shoot with Andy Warhol for Interview Magazine because my teenage brain thought “maybe next time” was a valid career plan. Catastrophically naive you might say… another chapter in my HOLLYWOODN’T memoir on @substack https://whatlisasaid.substack.com/p/on-andy-warhol-studio-54-and-losing
