Cherokee County generously gives tax breaks to big corporations, which results in us working families having to pay for deficits. I oppose the proposed trash fee (Ordinance No. 2026-11). Here’s what I shared at the public hearing this past Monday, June 15, 2026:

Council members, my name is Stephanie Holstein. I’m a resident of the Town of Blacksburg, an active member of the Southern Workers Assembly, and a candidate for South Carolina State House District 30. I’m here because this proposed trash fee is wrong.

This is a regressive tax. A flat $20 a month hits a senior on Social Security and low-income families much harder than wealthy households. That’s not shared sacrifice, that’s shifting the burden onto the people who can least afford it, especially right now as costs are skyrocketing and our wages aren’t keeping up.

This fee will invite illegal dumping. Forcing a mandatory fee on people who are already stretched thin means some of them will make hard choices. And the result will be trash on our rural roads and on our vacant lots, creating environmental problems that will cost the county to clean up.

And this is just the beginning of the cost. History is consistent: government fees that start low don’t stay low. This $20 is a foot in the door. Give it a few budget cycles, and our neighborhoods will be paying far more than they thought.

But here is what makes this truly infuriating: it’s who you choose to protect.

While you squeeze working-class families and retirees, this county routinely hands out generous Fee in Lieu of Taxes agreements to multi-million dollar corporations, CUTTING their property taxes for decades. Big industries generate massive waste. And yet their profit margins are shielded while us and our neighbors are asked to cover a $6 million budget deficit. A deficit that is the result of choices this council made.

That is not fiscal responsibility. That is asking working people to pay for decisions made to benefit powerful big corporations.

As an organizer and as a candidate for State House, I am urging you today: stop treating residents like an ATM. Make corporations pay their fair share. And vote no on this unfair, regressive fee. taken in Gaffney, South Carolina by @holsteinforhouse

Tax corporations, invest directly in workers.

County investment at the top through corporate tax cuts does not benefit workers. This “development strategy” for the past 30 years has failed families. Our individual taxes continue to rise, while corporations lock in low percentages for decades. Our long term unemployment continues, the gap in wages widens, and families see less and less resources in our community.

It’s time to put workers before business by increasing the minimum wage, passing collective bargaining for public workers, and investing in childcare and affordable housing.
