Some of the world’s finest craftsmanship occurs just south of Oaxaca de Juarez, where families that have passed down skills generations spend months on each piece, designing, carving and painting some of the most amazing sculptures.

What are Alebrijes?

Thanks to movies like Disney’s Coco, people worldwide now recognize this Mexican folk art and are eager to discover their own spirit animal.

Overall, alebrijes celebrate and honor the magic of creativity and the beauty of a more ethereal and spiritual world.

In 1936, 30-year-old Mexican papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares (also known as a cartonero) invented the fantastical creatures after becoming sick and hallucinating strange animals, including a donkey with wings and a rooster with the body of a frog.

In the dream, the animals chanted a nonsense word, which today we know as “alebrijes”.
After waking up from the dream, Linares could not stop thinking about the creatures and the word “alebrijes”.

Knowing he was skilled in papier-mâché art, he brought his dreams to life by recreating the creatures and sharing them with his family and friends.

Eventually, his artwork caught the attention of famous artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who commissioned him to create specialized alebrijes for them.

Alebrijes are unique because no two are ever alike. Every artisan who designs one gives the spiritual animal its own unique traits and personality. Some have wings, while others have antlers, horns, and fins.

🌿 The first thing our Guests notice when stepping into @helloholt Hotel De Mi Independencia is our lush courtyards 🌿

We love plants. We love how they make our spaces feel. We love how much Guests comment on them.

When you see plants filling up a hotel or rental property, that’s a good sign your host takes great care of the property.

In a bright location like Mexico, getting sun to the plants is the easy part. The hard parts are fighting off petulance and bugs and plant diseases, and the watering schedule, especially when you’re in a drought like we are now.

We train our staff to watch out for diseases and bugs that could spread. Often, our Guest Experience team will have to coordinate gardeners around Guests. And of course, sometimes plants don’t make it and need replacing.

It’s all a part of the cycle of keeping a home and hotel presentable and welcoming for Guests.

Next time you stay in a vacation rental or hotel that’s lush with plants, you’ll have an appreciation for how much effort the entire team top-to-bottom does to maintain all those living things.

Exclusively a @helloholt property. Contact us for dates and rates.

What’s your DNA?

Custom furniture isn’t easy… but it sure is rewarding when it works out right.

Given the markets we primarily operate in - Mexico and Romania - we have access to some incredible craftsmen at reasonable pricing.

It allows us to “swing for the fences” when it comes to having fun with creating unique spaces for our Guests.

In the four years we’ve been our own designers and developers, we’ve learned a ton about the construction and furniture creation processes that we continually improve on with one goal in mind:

Creating incredible spaces for our traveling Guests.

Designing spaces for Guests and creating incredible experiences for them is our DNA. by @holtoaxaca
