As the son of immigrants, I learned early on that my value was tied to my physical gifts more than what I could do with my mind. Writing has always been a constant in my life, but it never felt like more than a hobby until now.

Grateful to be part of the 2025 PEAK Writers Fellowship. This experience has challenged me to grow, articulate, and expand as a storyteller, especially in spaces where our stories are often overlooked and where we’re rarely given opportunities due to stereotypes and limited expectations.

For Pacific Islanders in America, our worth is too often measured by how strong we are, how fast we run, how hard we hit. Rarely are we recognized for our minds. This fellowship gave me the space to sharpen my voice and write stories that reflect the depth of who we are.

Whether it leads to something or not, the growth is the win. Thank you to everyone at PEAK @dledouxm @brchun @whatwouldkritdo for this opportunity. Thank you @netflix for investing in our excellence.

Most of what you’ve seen on screen is from the eyes of those who vacation and visit Hawai’i. HAMMERS, led by our local boys @brchun @that.juju.alexander @kahuapono and @hoobrah_js gives you a glimpse into the lives of the ones who live here, fighting each day not to get priced out of paradise. It may not always be right, but it’s ALWAYS necessary.

An honor to be part of this special project written by @brchun and shot with the scrappiest CAST and CREW in the business. Every one of these hammahz is a master of their craft, and I learned a lot being among them. Shoutout to my right-hand man @michaeltanji for crafting the images in my head and, in true indie fashion, making it happen with duct tape, spit, and gum 😂

Mahalo to @sightandsoundhawaii for the incredible camera package. It let us capture this part of the culture the way we’d only dreamed of. @sundanceorg and @taaforg for supporting Bryson Chun as our Pasifika trailblazer reppin’ straight outta Hawai’i.

Moana Live-Action Premiere! An honor to have played a small part in this film. Our people are young in the game, so it was such a beautiful thing to see us come together with our own talents and abilities to help create something special. We’re “Along the Way” and I couldn’t be more excited for us! Malo ‘aupito @disneystudios @peakpasifika taken in Hollywood Bowl by @holy.moli

We’re kicking off summer with a new PEAK Catch-Ups series about Below the Line creatives, staff, and crew - you know, all the people who actually make a movie or TV show HAPPEN. If you’re not familiar, the term “Below the Line” is derived from the top sheet of a film budget, simply referring to the fact that costs before production (script, producers, talent, directors) are separated by a line from actual production costs (AD, grips, transportation, stunt performers, craft services, makeup, DP, Editor, Hair & Makeup, literally everyone else).

Our first Catch-Up of this series will be PEAK Interim ED and Producer @humblesandwich chatting with @holy.moli! You might recognize his handsome face from the PEAK Writers Fellowship, but by day, Pingi is an accomplished stunt professional and has worked on shows like COUNTDOWN as @ulilatukefu’s stunt double, and movies like the up-coming live-action MOANA! So come back here for an Instagram Live on June 30 to learn what it takes to take a hit and keep on going!

VAHA’A | THE DISTANCE BETWEEN will be released this week.

What a beautiful journey this has been.

3 years ago, this film began as scattered thoughts, emotions, and experiences written down in moments of reflection. To now see it become something tangible, something real that can be shared with the world… phew! It’s been one of the most healing experiences of my life.

Our festival run has been incredible, and I’ve been grateful for every screening, every conversation, and every person this film has connected with along the way. But more than anything, I’m excited to finally release this film into the world.

There’s a real fear in vulnerability. Fear in taking the thoughts that live inside your mind and placing them on screen for others to see. My heart would beat out of my chest every single time this film played in a packed theater because it comes from very personal places. From my experiences with masculinity, fatherhood, culture, grief, love, and healing.

But if this story can help even one person feel seen… challenge a perspective… spark a conversation… or inspire healing in any way… then every second of this journey will have been worth it.

Late post, but wanted to give a quick thanks to @x_hems and @byutvsportsnation for bringing me out a couple weeks back to be a part of the pregame show against TCU. My dad has been a massive BYU fan since the 80’s, but has never gone to a game, so this was a special one to bring him to. Especially with the win!

Since then, @byufootball has closed out their regular season 11-1. They have a huge game this week with the BIG 12 Championship, and it’s a chance to redeem their only loss of the season… against #5 Texas Tech University.

I’m putting my tithing on BYU’s offensive line again, but they have to walk into this game with a chip the size of Provo on their shoulders. This is the redemption they’ve been praying for, the last merciful chance the good Lord has so graciously granted them. If they answer that call, the quarterback gets the ball out, the run game breathes and those drives that HAUNTED them last time finally start to sustain.

But make no mistake, that road runs straight through a Texas Tech team blessed by an ocean of oil and a bank account bigger than God’s. They’ve built the most competitive roster money can buy. Their defensive line comes off the ball like they’re running from hellfire, and whoever has the ball, has their salvation.

….and then there’s that linebacker. The fallen angel who ruins lives and hopes. JACOB RODRIGUEZ. A man playing the game with such fury and hate it’s pure BLASPHEMY! With 7 FF, 4INT, over 100 tackles and an offensive TD because he hates rules. If his name showed up on the Heisman ballot, nobody would blink.

So for BYU… this is it. Redemption or repeat. Heart or heartbreak. This is where you decide who you are. LETS GO! taken in BYU Football Stadium by @holy.moli
