To everyone hitting the DMs asking “How was LS Fest?” and “How did the tune go?”—here is the raw, unfiltered update.
We raced to the literal last dying second to get the Holy Roller to Vegas, but we missed it again. This time, the “kick to the nuts” was a lot harder than just a missed deadline.
Huge thanks to Jim and David at Cal Speed for being in the trenches with us. Thanks to my son and uncle for all the time. We battled failed injectors the day we were supposed to leave, replaced them, and finally got it on the rollers. We tuned ultra-conservatively with a 4lb wastegate spring, but when the dyno read a whopping 200hp, we knew something was fundamentally wrong. We actually thought the calibration was off. It wasn’t.
One trip up the block later, we heard it: that dreaded knocking sound every builder fears.
We pulled the oil filter and found the “forbidden glitter”—sparkles and chunks of metal. A full teardown revealed the nightmare. This engine was a masterclass in bad decisions by the builder:
• Two rods installed backwards.
• Zero bearing tolerance measurements.
• Un-filed/un-deburred rings.
• Debris, red shop rag remnants, and engine paint inside the internals.
The result? Every single rod bearing trashed, some nearly fused to the crank, and scored cylinder walls. A complete loss with less than 17 miles on the engine.
Lessons were learned. In this industry, those who talk about how great they are usually are anything but; the truly great let their work do the talking. Shame on them for lacking conviction, but shame on me for buying the “snake oil salesman” goods.
You live, you learn, and you regroup. The Holy Roller isn’t done—we’re just doing it right this time. 🛠️📉
