Queeriosities (Art and Makers Fair) 02-04 October • Copeland Gallery, Peckham ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tickets and info via link in bio We’re proud to announce that Joey Terrill [@homeboybeautiful] will show work as part of “Here We Go Again”, this year’s feature fine-art exhibition at Queeriosities, curated by Davy Pittoors. Joey joins five other bold queer artists — Foundry Wench, Tom Hemingway, Sandy Kiralawella, Jingyi Li and Ailsa Ogden. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Here We Go Again” explores the idea of queer “truth” in a moment when we face increasingly unstable and competing realities. With practices spanning lace-making, metalwork, mixed-media installation, drawing and painting, the artists consider how queer survival in our modern dark age requires an insistence that queer truths are fiercely valid and real, even when they exist in messy contradiction. — Since the 1970s, Los Angeles Chicano artist Joey Terrill has explored the intersection of his Latino and gay male identities in his art. Living with HIV for 46 years, his art career has also paralleled and documented his four decades as an AIDS activist. His work was recently included in the Tate Modern show “Frida: The Making of an Icon.” Joey’s work is held in the permanent collections of numerous institutions, including MoMA (New York), the Whitney Museum (New York), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.), SFMOMA (San Francisco), the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) and LACMA (Los Angeles). Artist Joey Terrill has spent his career crafting work centered around the Los Angeles community he calls home. Here, he shares the story behind Chicos Modernos, a Spanish-language comic distributed in the late 1980s and 90s to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS prevention. The Lucas Museum is proud to house Chicos Modernos in our inaugural exhibition as one of the many graphic stories crafted to inspire and forge community.
