Sometimes you gotta make a pillowy soft serif you wanna take a nap on, okay???

When I was searching for sources for this revival project, I found Cushing, a typeface I thought looked really warm and charming. I later realized all the features I loved about it (most notably its big rounded serifs) were a result of ink swells on the specimen page—a printing mishap! I felt so silly. But I leaned into the silliness and committed to the CHUNK‼️

Introducing Cushion, a text typeface that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Cushion lends softness to structure by celebrating the ink swell. You can’t spell functional without ✨fun✨

Made during my first term at @typewest 💖 thank you to all my mentors and friends who got me (and Cushion) to this point!

In the midst of perfecting letterforms for my first-ever typeface during my first term at @typewest, I challenged myself to draw imperfect letters and words in my sketchbook. What if I didn’t care what the letters looked like, whether or not they were consistent or novel or interesting, and just drew whatever shapes came to mind? I really hemmed and hawed whether or not these were “worth” sharing but ultimately, if learning type design has taught me one thing, process is a lot more compelling than perfection. by @honey.dew.melon

✨Artist Feature✨
Mel (they/them) is a queer, Chinese-Indonesian multidisciplinary artist based on Unceded Coast Salish Territories. Their work is a love letter to colours, finding small joys, community building, and celebrating silliness, channelled primarily through costume design, graphic design, and visual art. Recent theatre collaborations include designing costumes for Playwrights Theatre Centre, Pacific Theatre, ITSAZOO, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre, among others. In their free time, they love solving crosswords, being surrounded by trees, and sharing hotpot with loved ones.
