Featured here is my work selected for the second edition of the @clayawards 2026 held this year at @__artformes located at the @oldbiscuitmill in Woodstock. The exhibition is now open and runs until 26 November.

Vessel as Cradle of n/om
Primarily a ceramist, the artist embraces drawing to narrow the gap between traditional ceramics and digital materialities. He crafts aesthetic solutions by fusing highly detailed ballpoint pen drawings on to self-glazing Parian slip cast clay bodies (@valentineclays) as digitally printed transfers (@digitalceramicsystems).

The ceramic statement presented here introduces a new body of work developed after the artist’s investigation of Southern African rock art and particularly San cosmology. The artist draws inspiration from the San spiritual universe as manifested in images painted on the walls of mountain caves, their cracks and crevices. Archaeologist Dr Siyakha Mguni’s publication Termites of the Gods (2015, Wits University Press) was found to be particularly significant to his process.

His new vessel, with digitally printed ceramic transfers of his drawings of five San art images celebrates the iconography of San rock art, its site-specific materiality and “natural modelling” in a reimagined ceramic discourse.

I wish to thank the following fabulous human beings. Dominic Hobbs, my designer, for his continued support with the website and all digital and design work. To Prof Dr Siyakha Mguni for guidance with knowledge and insight into Khoisan Art and terminology. To Helene Smuts for her editing of my poor writing skills. And finally, John Shirley for years of support and dialogue in the refinement of the work. Studio photography @sarahdepina taken in The Old Biscuit Mill by @hongenius

Yesterday I also visited @marc__edwards at his studio at @woodstockfoundry. Located in Woodstock’s Art and Culture hub, down the road from the @oldbiscuitmill . With coffee shops and other established businesses- ensuring critical mass for an incredible working environment. Always good to meet up and share ideas and visit Galleries in the area - especially @stevenson_za nearby. Unfortunately I missed the @hyltonnel exhibition. However I bought the catalogue. taken in Woodstock, Western Cape, South Africa by @hongenius

Yesterday I visited @sarahwalterspotter in her gallery come studio. As I approached her studio, I could see her at the wheel through the window. Her studio and gallery is located on the corner of the street in Newlands. The perfect setting for locals to get a glimpse into her ceramic world. The wet white porcelain gleaming as she refines the thrown form and shape of the vessel on the wheel, just as I walk into the gallery space. Perfect timing for her to take a break, as the vessel rests and we enjoy a cup of tea and a serious conversation about the joy of making. We have never met, but I have a huge admiration for her maker’s hand. A master craftsperson with a discerning eye in every aspect of studio-ceramics. What a treat to get a glimpse into her ceramic practice/world. You too have an opportunity to experience it up close and own one or more of her works. Opening Saturday 7 November at 10:00 - 12:30 is an exhibition titled, Sky After Rain: Exploring Porcelain. An exhibition of her incredible creations as well as other renowned local potters listed on the poster herewith enclosed ( see image). taken in Newlands, Western Cape, South Africa by @hongenius

I have really enjoyed my working holiday here in Hout Bay. It is the perfect place to gain easy access to key arts and culture, including scenic and hospitality spots in the Western Cape. For me very central. Hout Bay has some gems in terms of coffee shops and fine cuisine on all levels. The scenic routes in and out and about provide great comfort during the day trips. taken in Kalk Bay Cape Town by @hongenius

A visit to the @rust_en_vredegallery and the @cubeandclaymuseum in Durbanville Western Cape. Host to the first @clayawards two years ago. An incredible resource for the development of the arts and specifically ceramics. It has a restaurant and coffee shop to add to the experience. A beautiful setting in the heart of Durbanville. One of my works was taken up into the collection. For you, for me, for ceramics forever. taken in Rust-en-Vrede Gallery by @hongenius

Last week I went to Kalk Bay specifically to pay my first visit to @kalk_bay_modern. No sooner than I walked inside, I bumped into @bronwenfindlay and she introduced me to Cheryl Rumbak (the gallery owner), that happened to arrive at the gallery soon after. Well Cheryl is one of those very special human beings, full of energy and generous in every way. We have never met, but we share very similar interests and experiences in the art world. She began to share with me her incredible projects with the KoiSan, especially in Namibia. Two of her publications are featured in the images enclosed. I was mesmerised by all her amazing narratives and experiences - time spent with communities to bring their creativity and cultures to the fore. Her gallery is one of a kind; very special indeed. It permeates art and craft that matters. A discerning eye, hence the fold includes works by Kentridge, Simon Stone to Malcom Payne - the list goes on. Ceramics and textiles from all over the country, rural and urban are for sale. What a treat and experience it was. Thank you Cheryl for your continued support and generous spirit. taken in Kalk Bay Modern Harbour Gallery by @hongenius

Yesterday I spent the day in Kalk Bay. They really did a fabulous remodelling of the street and pavements, more parking. It’s so beautifully and the shops have much to offer - perfect for strolling and browsing. Lots of interesting shops and different dining experiences on offer. I ate at the @olympia_cafe - always a fabulous treat. Consistently at it to offer a memorable dining experience on all levels. Meeting customer needs. The atmosphere is just incredible and that view. I went mainly to visit @kalk_bay_modern - a phenomenal gallery, upstairs from the Olympia. But more of that in the next post. taken in Kalk Bay by @hongenius

What an experience on offer @norvalfoundation. The sheer scale and refinement of the bronzed forms and shapes are just otherworldly, when consumed in its entirety. They glow in the gallery halls on a scale that is totally overwhelming - I have never experienced figuration on a scale like this. Their voluptuous forms and shapes are spectacular. Masterfully crafted, @brettmurrayza smooth and shiny bronzes are perfectly curated and suited against the greenish-grey walls and glass facades. At times they fill the smaller spaces, the works surrounds you, you can feel them upclose. But as you move from room to room and hall to hall the scale of the works looms much larger than life and the encounter becomes totally all-consuming - On mass scale. Thank you @norvalfoundation for this memorable experience. taken in Norval Foundation by @hongenius

Today I visited the @norvalfoundation art museum to view Brett Murray’s sculpture retrospective(b1961). Spectacular to see all his work in one space at one time. Sculptures only. Here are some of his earlier works. We were at UCT at the same time, our Professor was Bruce Arnott. His stylised forms and shapes were very seductive, especially for those students which came in contact with him. I love these earlier works, they are so gutsy. So in your face. The rest to follow. taken in Norval Foundation by @hongenius

Whilst at @ebonycurated in Franschhoek I saw these two small hand-built ceramic sculptures made by John Nowers, my mentor, whilst a student at UCT. One rarely find examples of his work up for sale. They are titled, Death of the Lion Queen (1994) and Lion on a Cart (1991) respectively. He won a merit award for one of his works at 1985-6 Cape Town Triennial held at Iziko. taken in Franschhoek, Western Cape by @hongenius
