9:04 and 3rd Overall at Ironman Korea… On paper that is indeed a good result, and it is a 16 minute personal best from Ironman Vietnam back in May. But in reality, I feel rather disappointed. How you race an Ironman is a reflection of your training block and how you are as a person and I felt like I fell short of my personal standards.

In the journey leading up to Ironman Korea, I have been so obsessed with trying to become a better runner. I felt that my worth was tied to how good I was as a runner that I lost focus on what was actually important which was becoming a better triathlete.I cut corners in my bike training and didn’t have the discipline in myself to get the important bike sessions done in this block. 2 weeks before race day, I found myself sitting at the side of TMCR just wondering what kind of standard am I accepting when I couldn’t find it within myself to get my long ride done.I’ve let my ego take control of my training the wrong way and was ultimately defeated by it 130km into the bike where I entered a really dark place, something that didn’t happen in Vietnam. At that moment, I felt really pathetic and I wanted to call it quits. So yes, it is a Personal Best and a good timing, but I do wonder how much of it was because I actually became better than who I was.

I am very grateful for all the support I have received from everyone, but a part of me still felt that I have let you guys down because this wasn’t the version of myself that I wanted to present to you guys. I have many things that I have to work on not just in training but also as a person. What I can promise is the next time I stand on an Ironman startline, I will deliver the best version of myself.

See you guys in Hamburg xx

Finally did what I came into this sport to do… 26 weeks ago I set a crazy goal for myself to break 8:50 in my debut ironman and I wanted to do it on my terms which included unbroken streaks of 20-24 hour training weeks, showing up to work as the most reliable junior engineer in office and in a course that I would be fkn proud of achieving my goals in.

A bit bumped out that I did not get the opportunity to present my best self this round but I am so damn happy I fought through all sorts of adversities in the lead up to this all up to race day itself… and I would take the ability to deal with them well over a fast debut anytime.

To @tookhooforskhoo and @iron_monsta, thanks for trailblazing and igniting a spark within me to want to embark on this journey… You guys have set the standards for us younger guys to surpass…

To my mates at @trex_sg and sawcon, thanks for ensuring that I am not alone on this journey and keeping me humble… you guys motivate me to work hard and keep me humble

To my pro friends @samir.varma, @aaron.kiss, @brycechong_triathlon and @m.mmenezes: give me a few more years and lets race it out in the pro field 🤘🤘🤘

Still have unfinished business for the year, time to dance again on the edge of burnout for the 8:50 dream by @hoofangyu

Six years ago, I started this journey from watching Yowamushi Pedal. Have always been inspired by Teshima-san and have always dreamed of riding a Supersix Evo.

Got myself a little gift for working hard in university, work and triathlon in the last 4.5 years and working hard to make them all work out. Gna continue to work hard and chase that triathlon dream :)

Presenting Fang Yu’s Cannondale Supersix Evo:
Frame - Size 54, High Mod
Groupset - Shimano Dura Ace Di2 12 Speed
Handlebars - Tavelo Avro 380mm x 120mm

A lot of you guys know how special Taiwan is to me, and I can’t be more excited to embark on my Taiwan Racing block across November and December!

1st November - 70.3 Kenting
13th November - Formosa Xtreme Triathlon
20th December - Taipei Marathon

Saw the startlists and there are really strong taiwanese guys whom I am really looking forward to meet.

Even more stoked to have 博智 and 蜂蜜 to be part of my support crew for @formosa_taiwanxtri. Xtreme Triathlons are super cool because are support crew mandatory, which means I am not racing alone.

These few months I have been taking interest in getting the black shirt at Norseman before I turn 30, and I just thought this would be the first step towards it. It is going to be a long and rough day, but we will make it to the top of Mt. Hehuan together 💪 by @hoofangyu

Watching the Ironman World Champs yesterday reminded me on why this distance is so beautiful. The Ironman is not just a race that you can do every other weekend, simply because of the amount of time it takes to recover from it. Because it is something that you can’t do so frequently, it puts a lot more meaning each race start.

Everyone in these have a reason why they do it, something that they are willing to put themselves on the line for. These reasons must be strong enough to carry you through the entire race, and powerful enough to keep you moving when things get dark.

For me, I believe that it is possible to outwork talent and experience. I don’t have an endurance sports background pre National Service, nor do I have the 10+ years of experience many of the top guys have. However, what I do have is a relentless work ethic. When I race, I represent every previous version of myself who put in the work and the “second-tier” athletes who were unable to achieve what they wanted. When your convictions are strong, the distance itself is really nothing.

Completing an Ironman is a feat in itself, and something worth being proud of. But sometimes, even after achieving something extraordinary, you can’t help but feel a little disappointed when things don’t go the way you hoped.

Both feelings can exist at the same time. You can be proud of what you’ve accomplished while still wanting more from yourself. #lacperformance #triathlon #ironman #singapore #sport 🎥 @jovan.choo by @hoofangyu

@hoofangyu in LAC at Ironman Gurye where he came in 3rd overall in 9h 4m. A venture to getting fang’s trisuit a little more aero then he was before and a little more heat adaptive than before. #lacperformance #beattheheat 📸 @jovan.choo by @hoofangyu

Classic 7 x 2k threshold set on 90s rest.
Pretty simple rules just nothing below 4 min/k for the first 4 and the last 3 is free for all.

Oh and finally feel like I deserve to wear this cap :)

A simple hello can go a long way and sometimes it may bring you to a 2 week camp in Taiwan…

Meet Poh Chih, someone who walks a similar path to me on the other side of the world. In these last 16 days, we shared countless 5 am alarms, getting shit done before we proceeded with our work responsibilities before knackering at it again after work. His work ethic is incredibly remarkable and this is something that I am super inspired by :))

Beyond training, he also brought me all around the beautiful parts of taiwan: the mountains of hsinchu and the coast of hualien. Over the weekend, we had a few roadtrips… one to taipei and the other to hualien… just two guys with two bikes at the back of the car getting mesmerised by the beautiful scenery…

I came to taiwan wanting to learn about the taiwanese method… If I could describe it in a few words, that would be “utmost hospitality and kindness”…

I would also like to announce that I will be racing @formosa_taiwanxtri and have Poh Chih as my lead support. 博智,靠你了🙏
