The sliding dovetail is an ancient joinery technique, dating back to early Egyptian times, used to securely lock two boards at right angles, typically at points other than the corners. It acts as both a dado and a mechanical lock, providing immense strength without requiring nails or glues to hold against tension. The joint has been utilized for centuries in cabinetry, drawer construction, and in modern engineering for linear movement. taken in Agua Dulce, CA by @hooker_custom

From lumber to delivery and back home ••••••••••••••
White oak (Quercus alba) has been a cornerstone of American furniture and construction since colonial times, prized for its durability, water resistance, and strength. Originally used for shipbuilding and cooperage, it became a premier furniture wood in the late 1800s, peaking in popularity during the “Golden Oak” and Arts and Crafts movements. taken in Agua Dulce, CA by @hooker_custom

Fresh goop! Natural wood finishes have been used for thousands of years to protect and beautify wood, starting with primitive mixtures of animal fats and plant sap. Ancient civilizations used oils like linseed and tung, along with waxes, while shellac has been used in India for millennia. These natural coatings were often re-applied to preserve wood against decay and wear. taken in Agua Dulce, CA by @hooker_custom

Another successful delivery ••••••••••••••••••••• Redwood history spans from ancient times to modern conservation, with indigenous peoples inhabiting the forests for millennia before European contact led to a massive logging boom after the California Gold Rush. The logging industry’s rapid expansion, driven by the wood’s fire and insect resistance, drastically reduced the old-growth forests, prompting conservation movements like the formation of the Save-the-Redwoods League and the establishment of protected areas like Redwood National Park taken in Agua Dulce, CA by @hooker_custom

The history of the arch in architecture began in ancient Mesopotamia around the second millennium B.C. for underground structures and drains, but the Romans perfected the design for large-scale, above-ground construction. The Romans, influenced by the Etruscans, used arches extensively in aqueducts, bridges, and iconic buildings like the Colosseum, demonstrating their structural potential and allowing for larger and more complex buildings. The arch was later adopted and adapted in many architectural styles throughout history, including Romanesque, Gothic, and Neoclassical. taken in Agua Dulce, CA by @hooker_custom
