In the age of burnout, AI and everything in between, the private spaces we retreat to have the ability to do so much more than simply provide shelter; they become us and shape the lifestyle we lead. They help us find balance in the daily grind and peace in the place we call home. For many in the tri-state area this balance has a city vs country equation. Often work and careers are tied to the city, but there’s a magnetic gravitational pull toward natural environments and connection to community.

From ages six through ten, artist Bill Hochhausen grew up in post-WW II Europe. There he saw many examples of people out in the open, working with their hands. “Their productivity and ingenuity was admired, praiseworthy and it looked like they had fun,” he remembers. “Who could resist?”

So when his family was able to settle here in NYC, his intuition about materials and using tools seemed a ‘natural’ skill, leading him to be enrolled in the High School of Industrial Art (now restructured as the High School of Art and Design). Back then it trained working-class students in practical sign painting, advertising design, and other jobs for someone “good with their hands.”

In Indian Lake, NY, a quintessential experience in the Adirondacks waits unsuspectingly in the southern-central region of the park. Paralleling an undulating Route 30, the hamlet’s namesake lake shimmers under the sun for 12 miles, providing water access to mountains and waterfalls, entry to campsites, and a healthy expanse to swim, go fishing, or kayaking. Cell phone service becomes minimal along this stretch, eliminating a difficult distraction and drawing individuals to feel present among the forested surroundings. The small hamlet will leave you speechless or in love, whichever comes first. If it isn’t your home, Indian Lake will be the best getaway to leave a piece of your heart among a peaceful reprieve.

Bats eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes an hour, which is equal to their body weight in insects! Bats locate mosquitoes through echolocation, which is the process of emitting high-pitched beep sounds and then listening back to the echoes, usually at 10-20 beeps per second. Imagine how much more comfortable your backyard barbecue would be with a couple of bats clearing the air. Dinner and a show!
As we approach the Fourth of July, a holiday traditionally celebrated with fireworks, lets consider the ecological and animal impacts of that holiday tradition. If we do that, we realize it may be better to turn to other avenues for a dazzling light and sound show this summer. Fireworks can be a scary time for pets. As for the animals we want to be out celebrating with, or inside cuddled up with, the noise that rockets through the air from fireworks is traumatic. Reports of dogs during the Fourth of July show 80% experience anxious behavior while fireworks are in the sky. There are many reasons why dogs may be afraid of fireworks, with some breeds predisposed to be afraid of loud noises while others sense it as a threat. As for birds, the loud noise caused by explosions in the air can lead to prolonged periods of flight, which can expel unnecessary energy and impact them returning to nests safely. Fireworks increase pollutants on the nights they are released and release chemical contaminants into water sources, decreasing water quality over time. Additionally, and less obviously, fireworks release...
