“It was probably just something I ate.”

“It’s probably just stress.”

“I’m probably just tired.”

We’re good at explaining away changes in our bodies, especially when there’s an easy explanation.

And yes, these symptoms can have many causes that have nothing to do with pancreatic cancer.

The point isn't to panic. It's to pay attention.

Persistent, unusual, or unexplained changes deserve a conversation with your healthcare provider.

Notice it. Ask about it. Get it checked.

Cancer in your family doesn’t automatically mean cancer is in your future.

But your family history can hold important information about your risk.

Certain inherited genetic changes and patterns of cancer within a family can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. Knowing that history can help you and your healthcare provider determine whether genetic counseling or testing may be appropriate.

Start with the basics:

Who in your family has had cancer? What type? How old were they when they were diagnosed?

You don't need to have all the answers. Start the conversation.

It sounds like a simple answer to a complicated problem.

For pancreatic cancer, there is currently no routine screening test recommended for people at average risk. But that doesn’t mean risk assessment and early detection efforts aren’t important.

Family history and inherited genetic changes can put some people at higher risk, and those individuals may benefit from specialized surveillance.

So instead of simply asking, “Have you been screened?” we need to be asking:

Do you know your risk?
Do you know your family history?
Do you know what questions to ask your healthcare provider?**

And we need research that gives more people a way to find pancreatic cancer earlier.

Because earlier detection could change what’s possible.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while our work focuses on pancreatic cancer, we know that cancer doesn't exist in a silo.

Today, we’re standing with breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and families, and with everyone whose life has been changed by cancer. 💗💜

Different cancers. Different experiences. But so many of the same needs: support, compassion, information, research, and hope.

At NPCF, we believe every person facing cancer deserves to feel seen, supported, and surrounded by people who care.
