A quick visit to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and I (Florafanatica) was drawn from a distance to a small number of giant trees which I immediately began speculating on what they might be as I marched toward them. I didn’t get this one until I was upon it and even then (with no label) I had to check myself as it’s the biggest example I’ve seen- ——- Magnolia denudata #yulanmagnolia known as Hakumokuren in Japanese and recorded as being over 150 years old. I’d love to see it in flower as it’s over 10 meters tall and must be a spectacle as the large, white, fragrant, cup-shaped blossoms appear in early spring (typically peaking in March) before the leaves emerge. Native to South-Central and Southeast China. We have plants for sale @hortulus_plants but fear not, in our climate they are modest sized trees suitable for above average sized gardens. #magnoliadenudata #thestoryoftrees #botanisinginjapan by @hortulus_plants

Lycium barbarum #gojiberry native to north and central China pictured in Japan. On @hortulus_plants we grow different cultivars of which the most popular are - Sweet Lifeberry® (Lycium barbarum): producing elongated, bright red, sweetly flavoured berries.
- Big Lifeberry® selected for its larger-than-average berries.
- No.1 Lifeberry® A high-performance commercial selection focused on flavour, active ingredients, and crop yield. My (Florafanatica) interest in this plant began a number of years ago having seen it being cultivated in China not far from our tissue culture lab. Long since cultivated in East Asia - its young shoots and leaves are harvested commercially as a leafy vegetable. Whilst most are familiar with the edible berries that are used in sweet and savoury dishes or simply as a garnish. Now popular in the west for smoothies and desserts as a source of sweetness. Although relatively uncommon it’s been cultivated in the UK since the 18th century and makes a great hedge, especially in coastal districts. Its red berries are attractive to a wide variety of British birds. Goji berries contain many nutrients and bioactive compounds which qualify them to be classified as superfruits. #solanaceae #ediblethebook by @hortulus_plants

Posted whilst in Japan. #camphortree - an old specimen outside the Imperial Palace along with street trees near #tokyostation - Cinnamomum camphora (C. officinarum) native here in Japan as well as Korea and Taiwan. An impressive evergreen tree belonging to #lauraceae that is cultivated for camphor, the culinary spice, and timber. We grow it @hortulus_plants and its currently available online from our friends @growtropicals It makes a fantastic bonsai, ornamental container specimen ( #macrobonsai ) or garden tree (for those in a sheltered/milder UK garden). #thestoryoftrees by @hortulus_plants

A favourite plant that has featured in all our home gardens over the last few years (we’ve moved too often)- Euonymus clivicola native to Nepal through Central China and Indo-China. #euonymusclivicola Rooted cuttings ready for potting in the spring ready for sale @hortulus_plants by @hortulus_plants

We have both red and the more typical pink fruited plants of Syzygium paniculatum on @hortulus_plants . Known under the common names of #magentalillypilly or magentacherry it is a member of #myrtaceae native to New South Wales, Australia. A broad dense bushy rainforest tree that can reach heights of over 15 m in the wild. The purportedly hardier selection that survived outside (under our carport) last winter (a mild winter with the exception of a week or so) has red fruit. It’s widely grown in eastern Australia and has been used as food by indigenous Australians and is fast becoming popular for its shiny plump fruits that have a curious but pleasant sour apple-like flavour and can be eaten fresh or made into jams. Sadly , it’s vulnerable in the wild #iuchredlistofthreatenedspecies although it is commonly cultivated/naturalised in Australia and elsewhere - climate permitting. Flowers pictured back in July this year. #syzygiumpaniculatum #ediblethebook by @hortulus_plants

@hortulus_plants One of our fastigiate #ginkgobiloba yet to be planted but looking amazing placed against the black stained fence. by @hortulus_plants

Looking very autumnal @hortulus_plants today - Viburnum dentatum - Zanthoxylum simulans - Isodon effusus - Diospyros kaki ‘Fuyu’ - Rhus trilobata - Acanthus sennii by @hortulus_plants

Looking back to Sunday when it was my pleasure to show Mark @kwekerij_bulk and his friends from Dutch botanical gardens and nurseries around @pinnacleplantsinternational . I managed to keep them together until we reached the @hortulus_plants department! They also had a wonderful time @mikesrareplants where they were amazed by his collection. I’m (Florafanatica) confident in saying Mike’s garden is the most biodiverse per m² than any garden in the UK and probably beyond! They were also treated to tea and delicious home baked cakes from Mike’s talented wife Tina. by @hortulus_plants

Hillier Gardens Head of Horticulture and Botany @barryclarke45 and myself were very pleased to meet our friend Mark @kwekerij_bulk and his fellow Dutch plant enthusiasts today at the @hilliergardens Their tour started with us and later Roy Lancaster took over for a full day of botanising. With over 42,000 trees and shrubs across at least 12,000 taxa a day, not even a week is enough, but they marched round and took in all that they could. Tomorrow they visit @mikesrareplants and the @hortulus_plants collection within the @pinnacleplantsinternational container production site in Wimborne Dorset. They wanted to see the very photogenic #cornuswilsoniana specimen at the Hillier Gardens which is somewhat of a treasure hunt within the 180 acres so as I returned to my car I left them a series of videos to lead them to it, Mark, did you find it? By the way, we grow the aforementioned Cornus and many others at Hortulus Plants. by @hortulus_plants

Raising plants from seed is so rewarding, in this case an exceptionally large pink flowered seedling of Illicium floridanum. Although typically red flowered pink forms are in cultivation but I can’t remember seeing one in this shade and size. Let me know what you think. In the meantime we have rooted cuttings to pot up ready for sale @hortulus_plants #illiciumfloridanum is native to southeast U.S.A. to Mexico (Tamaulipas to Puebla). #schisandraceae by @hortulus_plants

The brilliant blue of Salvia serboana BSWJ10236 native to Southwest Mexico (Oaxaca). Collected in autumn 2004 by #horticulturalhero ‘s Bleddyn and @suecrugfarmplants as seed in a mountainous forested area of Oaxaca. Forming a mound of distinct large Vitis-shaped rugose sticky grey-green leaves, in fact it was first introduced as S. vitifolia. A later collection was described to science by the American botanist Billie Lee Turner (B.L. Turner) in November 2011. #salviaserboana by @hortulus_plants

The #canaryislandholly or #macaronesianholly Ilex perado subsp. platyphylla a subspecies native to the Canary Islands (La Palma, Tenerife, La Gomera). A small tree or large shrub with impressive evergreen glossy leaves. I have always enjoyed the specimen in the Hillier Gardens where it has suffered cold damage over the years despite the shelter of neighbouring larger trees. In colder locations it makes a great container specimen that can be overwintered under cover away from freezing winds. It does well for us here in Dorset where the plants in the nursery garden and that of our own have so far been untroubled by recent winters. Certainly popular with our @hortulus_plants customers. #ilexperadoplatyphylla by @hortulus_plants
