Eight cozy rooms atop a little bar and restaurant in historic downtown Troutdale, Oregon. Opening November 2026

POSTS STORIES REELS

A new boutique hotel in Troutdale opens today: Hotel Reynard. Its name comes from the stories of Reynard the Fox, which has origins in Medieval Europe, 12th century. The people behind the project are co-owners Donald Kenney and Sean Hoard (The Suttle Lodge, Pal’s on Hayden Island). Sean is also the beverage director and Chef Bill Wallender (Ava Gene’s, Quaintrelle) oversees the tavern menu.

They offer 8 nicely-appointed rooms, a tavern offering seasonal cooking and a bar, and an outdoor patio.

I stopped by the other day for a little preview and thought it was a very nice place to spend some time - overnight, for a few days, or just having a meal in the tavern. It’s right there at the “Gateway to the Gorge,” so a sweet location if you are spending extended time exploring the Columbia Gorge.

From the team behind Suttle Lake Lodge & Boathouse in Sisters and Pal’s on Hayden Island comes @hotelreynard, a delightful new restaurant and boutique hotel in Historic Downtown Troutdale, just 30 minutes from Portland and en route to the scenic Columbia River Gorge. 🍁

We stopped in for a delicious lunch during the soft opening, and today, Hôtel Reynard officially opens to the public, with lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch service and rooms available for booking.

Everything about the experience feels warm and welcoming, with a lovely blend of historic character and fresh, contemporary design. The food was equally wonderful. We loved every bite, from fresh oysters on the half shell and chanterelles with leeks on toast, Fusilloni with fennel pesto, to the most perfectly prepared chicken paillard. For dessert, we enjoyed warm vermouth-poached pears with crème anglaise and almond cake with carrot marmalade. Simply delicious! 😋

After lunch, @danadrutz and I toured the individually designed guest rooms. Swipe through for a peek upstairs! ✨✨✨

We’ve got a few more things to finish in here, some curtains by the front door to shield you from the Gorge winds, a sign telling you where you’ve arrived. But it’s starting to feel homey in here. Might have a menu to share in a couple of days. by @hotelreynard

Our Friend Gabi Villasenor @mixedneeds had an opening this weekend at @nationale - when we realized we were not going to be able to source these crazy vintage pencil tile jollies for the bathrooms, we reached out to Gabi who had experience in doing custom tile work for @north45projects at @thecaptainwhidbey and asked if she would create custom tiles for us inspired but the Flora of the Sandy River are. She didn’t disappoint. Go see her show this week and buy some art from this amazingly talented human. by @hotelreynard

Looking forward to getting to know a lot of people from this spot. by @hotelreynard

A steak, a pint, a little candle, and a wooden table at The Bull in Charlbury. We love how little this scene needs to make us wish we were sitting there.

There’s something about the natural materials, the marks of things made by hand, and the simplicity of the food that makes you feel like this place has stories to tell. A good dinner, no particular ceremony, and the possibility that you’ll stay a little longer than you meant to.

What we love so much about The Bull in Charlbury is the way it unfolds. You come in on the corner, there’s a stair that rises up to the inn, a bar just ahead, and then more of the room keeps revealing itself. Chairs, booths, little nooks, and places to settle in. It feels old in the best way, like it’s grown into itself over time.

That idea has meant a lot to us at Reynard. We love a place that doesn’t tell the whole story at once, where each turn offers a little more to discover. A bar for a quick drink, a booth for a long meal, and then, just when you think you’ve seen it all, a whole garden waiting out back.

We have a real soft spot for the original Woodsman Tavern on Division. The beautiful plank floors, deep booths, copper-topped bar, and a room that could be burgers, oysters, and Bloody Marys at brunch, then a completely different scene at dinner. It was one of those places that felt like it belonged to the neighborhood.

We once bumped into Duane Sorrenson and Jason Barwikowski in Chicago while they were visiting restaurants for inspiration. They were headed to The Publican next, and when the Woodsman opened, you could see a little of that trip in the menu.

It’s funny how these places influence one another, and how years later we find ourselves looking back at the Woodsman in much the same way. This photograph is just a booth and a few plates, but it brings a lot back.

We can’t get over that beautiful shade of green at Clamato in Paris. The warm plank floors, plaster walls, turquoise tabletops, and a little walled courtyard tucked away out back. We had a wonderful long lunch there recently, served by a bartender who spoke such perfect French that we were pretty surprised when she overheard us talking and switched straight into a Midwest/Ohio accent.

And then there’s this beautiful tray of oysters, langoustines, and uni on pebble ice. Reynard isn’t a seafood restaurant, but living in Oregon, with the Columbia River nearby and friends like Max at Pearl Point Oyster @pearlpointoyster farming oysters on the coast, this kind of food feels close to home. A few oysters for the table and a glass of wine shouldn’t need a special occasion.

We’ve been cleaning handprints and the occasional faceprint off the windows almost every day. People keep stopping to peek inside, curious about what’s happening at our little corner.

Hotel Reynard is a cozy eight-room hotel above a neighborhood restaurant and bar in a building that’s been part of downtown Troutdale since 1926.

Along the way, we’ve collected an awful lot of pictures of other places. Restaurants we’ve loved, beautiful rooms, memorable meals, furniture, gardens, and little details that have stayed with us.

These are some of those references. We think there’s something important about showing the things that helped shape your ideas, and giving credit to the people who made them. Nothing really comes together on its own, and making something by hand involves an awful lot of looking, learning, and figuring things out as you go.

We’re looking forward to sharing more of what we’ve been up to. by @hotelreynard

It’s a little funny to be sharing a burger from Eel Bar in New York when there isn’t one on Reynard’s opening menu. That’s more or less intentional. Burgers have a way of becoming their own conversation, and we thought we’d get our sea legs before entering it.

Eel Bar is also part of a restaurant family tree we’re particularly fond of. Niles Fallon ( @niallsfallon ) once worked at Clyde Common @clydecommon here in Portland, which itself drew inspiration from places like Prune and Schiller’s in New York. It’s wonderful how these ideas travel between cities, change hands, and find their way back around.

Maybe we’ll have a burger in a month or two. We’d like to let the restaurant and its regulars figure that out together.

A table full of food at The Waterman’s Arms in London. Roast chicken, a beautiful piece of fish, a bowl of pasta. Everything looks delicious and completely unfussed over.

We love the idea of a meal where the food is wonderful, but nobody spends much time talking about it. You’re too busy catching up, telling stories, and enjoying each other’s company. You leave remembering what a great evening you had, even if you can’t quite remember what you ate. We think that’s about the highest compliment you can give a restaurant. And nobody had to do the dishes.
