It’s Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and I can’t help but think of my own battles and the only reason I made it through.

I’m often critical of the Army as an organization—especially when it comes to how mental health is treated and the ways the system can sometimes contribute to these very struggles. But I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t acknowledge the incredible support I’ve received from the soldiers around me.

The military is overwhelmingly made up of men. Despite the unique pressures of military service and a lifetime of being told to “man up,” I’ve watched young men consistently show up for one another in remarkable ways. I’ve seen Soldiers go out of their way to check on friends, sit with people in the mud, answer late-night phone calls, and simply be present when someone needed it. I’ve seen them do this for people they don’t know—simply because they’re human.

Countless times I’ve had Soldiers show up sleep deprived because they were just spending time with someone who needed help.

Maybe it’s how we build leaders. Maybe it’s because we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. Maybe this profession attracts people willing to carry the weight of others when they can’t carry it themselves. Whatever the reason, I’ve witnessed countless acts of compassion from soldiers who refused to let their brothers suffer alone.

Systems may fail us from time to time, but we do our best not to fail each other.

That’s one of the things that makes Soldiers so awesome. From the new Privates to the most senior Officers, it’s in our ethos “Never Leave a Fallen Comrade”. It’s woven into who we are. This organization gets that right- going out of your way on behalf of someone else.

If you’re struggling, reach out. If someone comes to mind while reading this, check on them.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do for each other is simply show up. by @hotsethrogen

But for real though - The military will give you experiences you’ll never be able to describe. Helicopters. Explosions. Brotherhood. Chaos. Purpose. The darkest humor ever. Some of the best people you’ll ever meet and moments you’ll never forget.

That said, a lot of service members are struggling quietly.

Veterans and service members continue unalive themselves at rates higher than the civilian population, while the VA and DoW continue facing shortages of mental health professionals. The mission doesn’t stop whether people are okay or not.

Military life can be incredible.
But it also breaks people.

Systems aren’t going to fix it:
Call on your friends.
Check on the homies.
Sit with people.
Save a life.

No person is an island.
Nobody is too strong to need help and nobody is too busy to give it.

Love y’all.
Godspeed. by @hotsethrogen
