Q&A and Cypher: House of Knowledge presents ‘The Unsigned Hype’

We celebrate MC Culture next week at ADE Beats with a selection of packed panels, exclusive film premieres, curated presentations and - of course - cyphers and performances. A crucial element in the history of MC Culture is generational exchange. In essence the MC is truly a communal figure, talking to crowds, hyping them up, taking a stance and being an integral part of a much larger cultural interaction, an exchange that was crucial for the global development of the culture. Younger artists were brought into shows and studio sessions, learning by watching, listening and testing themselves against the artists around them. Then they were given space to step forward and take the mic themselves. Knowledge, experience and visibility were passed from one generation to the next.  With their exciting new project ‘The Unsigned Hype’ – an honorary nod to the legendary column in The Source where some of the biggest names in hip-hop got their break – Rotterdam’s House of Knowledge is re-creating this foundational meeting of generations. ‘Unsigned Hype’ is a development program in which established artists and OG’s put forward new talent that excites them, offer them guidance and experience and introduce them to a wider audience. At ADE Beats hip-hop heavyweights Alee Rock, 4Shobangers, Nosa and Latifah will present the emerging MC’s that each of them is most excited by and discuss mentorship, artistic and cultural development, making space and creating inter-generational opportunities for MC’s.  Then it’s over to their selected talent. In a live cypher hosted by 101Barz veteran Rotjoch during ADE Beats, they step into the circle to show who they are, what they bring and why their OG’s believe they are among the next voices to watch.

Steam Down. The Art of Jamming. Live at BIRD Rotterdam.

From clinic to live show to a full-on jam, this night was about what happens when musicians get the space to listen, learn, experiment and create together.

It started with The Art of Jamming clinic, sharing knowledge and breaking down what makes a jam work. Later, Steam Down took the stage and BIRD filled up. Horns out, grooves deep, room locked in.

Then the show opened up.

Musicians joined the stage, new combinations formed on the spot and the whole room became part of the jam.

Steam Down spoke about how special it is to have a programmer and venue supporting this kind of space, because access to it isn’t a given for every musician.

That one hit home. 💙

Supporting live music, new talent, improvisation and Black music culture has been part of BIRD from day one. Fifteen years in, we’re still proud to make room for nights like this in Rotterdam.

From Steam Down’s first BIRD visit during Building Blocks in 2019 to The Art of Jamming in 2026.

Steam Down first came to BIRD back in 2019 for Building Blocks. Ever since, bringing them back for a clinic and a show has been something we’ve wanted to make happen for a long time. ⁠

Yesterday it finally did.⁠
⁠
First, The Art of Jamming clinic, sharing knowledge, stories, ideas and a whole lot of love for the music. Then later that night, all of that turned into pure energy on stage.⁠
⁠
A full-circle BIRD moment, and exactly what One Love is about. Bringing people together through music, sharing what we know, and celebrating 15 years of BIRD with the artists and communities who’ve been part of the journey.⁠

So much love and gratitude to Steam Down for coming back, sharing so openly and giving us a night we won’t forget anytime soon. ⁠

Our One Love 15y BIRD celebrations are in full swing, and on 24 September, we’re celebrating what we always believed in: bringing different people en sounds together. This time, alongside some longtime friends and fellow music makers.

The Alternate Take Festival is a collaboration between BIRD, @House of Knowledge, @Cult North and @De Nieuwe Lichting.

Four organisations that each have their own sound, community and perspective on what’s next. One night dedicated to discovering new music, new voices and new ways of looking at the scene.
