Well, it is spooky season…so here’s my would-be horror story:

According to our estate agents, the reason our house came back on to the market with absolute devine timing so that we could swoop in buy her was that the previous purchase fell through because those buyers wanted to turn her into an Airbnb.

Thankfully, there are restrictive covenants in the deeds meaning our property could only ever be used for residential purposes.

So, instead of becoming a holiday let, it became our home to be cherished and adored ❤️And I thank our lucky stars that they set that straight back in 1935 - because - IMAGINE! 😱

It’s true - multiple people on multiple occasions have told me (both online and in person!) to remove these original pelmet boxes for being too old fashioned, ha! Imagine ripping out 90 years of wonderful 1930s character? I know… me either!

Here’s why:

Wooden pelmet boxes were very common during the inter-war years as window treatments shifted toward streamlined, clean designs compared to Victorian or Edwardian styles. Like ours, they were often built out of lightweight, practical timber or painted softwood and designed to hide tracks and curtain headings.

Over the decades, many original pelmets were torn down during redecorating waves in the 1960s through the 1980s, when styles shifted to naked poles, valances, or modern tracks. Tearing them down often damaged the underlying plaster or architraves, meaning some homeowners chose to rip them out completely.

Finding them completely intact and untouched in unmodified 1930s homes is uncommon today but we are lucky enough to have them in all of our front bays… so praise be to our previous owners who clearly appreciated character and left these beauts in situ, because we find them very special and absolutely adore them.

We have spent several hours sanding, filling, painting and restoring our living room pelmet which features an elegant Art Deco design - typical of the 1930’s - and here she is looking magnificent even if I do say so myself. Another beautiful original 1930s detail saved, restored and preserved in our forever home.

Sadly, we don’t have these at the back of the house (by the looks of things they were never there) but I love this little touch of character so much so that I will have them replicated. Why did we stop adding little touches like this in our homes? Perfect not just for hiding curtain tracks but also making a room feel quite grand, all whilst framing beautiful bays and not to mention those views. What’s not to love?

Also, whilst on the subject of windows, if anyone has any recommendations for companies in the North East area that will make me some beautiful quality bespoke curtains, throw them my way! 🙌

Our ceiling rose and light fitting is in situ and we couldn’t be happier with it 😍
Thank you to @classicplasterm for supplying the perfect plaster ceiling rose to match our original 1930s deco cornice and the traditional-character-with-modern-edge vibe we’re going for in our beloved home! We love it. We had Glyn Morgan from Morgan’s Plastering fit this for us, and he did a sterling job - especially with my strict instructions not to disturb that textured ceiling one bit - he was careful and considerate and it turned out a dream!

What do you think?

Character > convenience 🤌
I’ve spent the last 7 days in between shifts at work, restoring our original 1930s deco stepped plaster cornice out of pure love and devotion to the character of our home and - I am thrilled with how it’s turning out. I didn’t even take any before pictures because I really wasn’t sure that I would be able to get it looking anywhere near as class as it does now, but I can assure you that it DID NOT look like this! It was cracked, chipped, peeling in multiple areas and in desperate need of some TLC. But when I love something, I love hard and I love this - so to me, it is worth never having nice fingernails again this year because just look at it now - not bad for a 91 year old 🤩

The first of many original features in the home that we adore, locked in, restored and secured for hopefully another 91 years and then some.

The prep work that goes into a reno project isn’t a very reel- worthy process. The progress and transformation appears minimal on camera but is significantly different to the person carrying out the work with a keen eye for detail; I spent 4 days ticking off some of the to-do’s on my quest for the best finish possible finish so I’m documenting mine 😉 I’ve still got a mountain of work to do in this room before we even think about colour and top coats - including restoring those wonderful floorboards. But the room does look and feel a lot different to the start of the week, and I am proud of how it’s coming along. 🙌

A perfect finish is all down to the prep. We’re all done with the paint stripping in this room and I’m entering my sanding era 💁🏻‍♀️Starting with this fire surround; it was in the house when we bought it and honestly? I’d have chosen it for this room myself. Lucky us! It’s simple yet grand and fits perfectly with the deco cornice and pelmets and picture rails and that whole 1930s deco inspired vibe we want running through our base decor. I know that when it’s re-painted, fixed in place and styled up with our stuff - it will look 🤌❤️

We’ve been quiet on this account lately… we set the reno chaos aside for the summer break, closed this door on this room and enjoyed lots of uninterrupted family time instead. Now, with everyone back at school, college and work, I’m desperate to get back to bringing my vision for our first “proper” finished room to life in time for our favourite seasons of the year.

We’re currently living in the back reception room, but I miss this room so much, it’s my favourite in the house and that’s before we put our stamp on it! It has the most beautiful views, receives the prettiest natural light and feels both characterful and calm at the same time.

We have been quietly curating and collecting everything we need to style this room up exactly how we want it; from custom prints to quirky candlestick, rockin’ rugs to bespoke neon signs, we hope to achieve a perfect mix of all of the beautiful traditional features in this space, layered with our personal style 😎

We’re just waiting on a few trades that should align by the end of the month, then after that, it’s mainly just sanding ( everywhere - including those original floor boards) and painting. “Just sanding and painting” says the fussiest perfectionist of paint prep and clean sharp lines there is!🙃 I’d love this room finished by the end of next month. Think we can do it? I’m manifesting that we absolutely will 🙌

Thanks for sticking around and still cheering us on despite our slow progress, it will be worth the full reveal, I promise 😉 Til then, I’ll leave you with this teaser of what I intend to create 😍
