Spain lifted the trophy 🏆Two feet of sand did the work.The pitch at the final wasn’t the stadium’s normal surface. It was engineered: bermudagrass grown for ten months on a farm, laid over sand, irrigation and ventilation, on top of the artificial turf that was already there. The scientist FIFA hired to oversee it co-authored the research showing that soil type, not grass species, determines how a surface absorbs a head impact.Elite football gets soil science. School yards get mowing.We wrote the reference chapter on managing park areas, sports fields and school yards: drainage, rootzone specs, compaction, contamination, remediation. Shanghai feels like someone took New York, Paris, and futuristic sci-fi architecture and put them in one city.A few things that surprised me —>The Shanghai Tower is the third tallest building in the world at 632 m (2,073 ft).#The city has more than 25 million residentsThe train from Nanjing to Shanghai takes about an hour, making it an easy day trip.The skyline has over 4,000 skyscrapers. Some of the most peaceful places in the city are hidden behind busy streetsTraditional Chinese architects loved curved roofs. They weren’t just beautiful, they also helped protect wooden buildings from rain.Classical Chinese design is based on the idea that humans and nature should exist in harmonyIn Chinese culture, the lotus symbolizes purity because it grows from mud yet blooms clean above the water.From 400-year-old gardens to some of the tallest buildings on Earth, Shanghai somehow makes it all fit together. I bet you didn’t know that contamination in urban parks concentrates in lower-income, historically marginalized neighborhoods.That is what our data shows across five Chicago parks, 233 samples, seven trace elements measured with pXRF.
