Luna Mahoux’s Open Studio, 2026

Luna’s practice gathers visual information as a living product of the post-internet condition, deeply rooted in the Black diaspora and its diverse cultural histories. Her research extends across different geographical and cultural contexts, tracing connections between music, identity, memory, and lived experience. She has moved between Chicago drill, jazz and Ethiopian music, Memphis rap, and Logobi in France, exploring the diverse forms through which Black culture is produced, circulated, remembered, and transformed.

Using the internet as an accessible archive, she collects pieces of everyday life, icons, and testimonies from Black communities to reconnect these stories across different places and times. By juxtaposing isolated screenshots with monumental assemblages, Mahoux opens up a reflection on collective memory. Within these visual layers, text becomes central: blending her own diary entries with quotes from Black artists to ground her personal narrative in a broader cultural history.

During their residency, artist Luna Mahoux began developing a participatory and itinerant project emerging from an embryonic idea of a Black archive, titled Black Itinerant Library.

The project invites people to contribute any kind of material—objects, images, documents, photographs, texts, or personal records—to build a collective archive that gathers, preserves, and celebrates Black culture and lived experiences across different communities and geographical contexts.

Rather than functioning as a fixed institution, the archive is conceived as mobile and continuously evolving, growing through the contributions of the people it encounters.

Contributions can be done via e-mail to: blackitinerantlibrary@gmail.com
