Rave culture was never meant to have an age limit 🖤

For decades, electronic music was often portrayed as something reserved for the young. But as the scene has grown, so has its audience. The first generation of house, techno and rave fans is now reaching their 50s, 60s and even 70s, with many still showing up on dancefloors today.

Some of them witnessed the rise of warehouse parties, underground clubs and the birth of modern electronic music firsthand. Now, they’re helping prove that growing older doesn’t mean leaving the dancefloor behind.

Dancing brings together movement, social connection and something meaningful to share with others.

The love of music doesn’t come with an expiration date. The generation that helped build dance music culture is still living it. by @houseandtechno.us

Rave culture didn’t appear out of nowhere 🖤

Its foundations were built in underground spaces where music became a way to find community, acceptance and freedom. In Chicago, venues like The Warehouse, led by Frankie Knuckles, became gathering places for people who found little space for themselves in mainstream nightlife. In Detroit, a new generation of artists pushed electronic music forward through underground parties and independent scenes.

Long before sponsorships, VIP sections and social media, these spaces were created by communities looking for somewhere to belong.

The music was important. But so were the people, the culture and the connection found on the dancefloor.

Amsterdam, 2000. Before they became global icons of trance 🖤

Tiësto and Armin van Buuren behind the decks at the legendary Melkweg for Wildlife, back when Dutch trance was still exploding and both DJs were building the foundations of their careers.

No massive festival mainstages. No Vegas residencies. No giant LED walls. And A State of Trance was still years away from its debut.

What makes this moment even more special is that their connection went beyond the DJ booth. The two were also collaborating in the studio, including on tracks released under the Alibi alias 🔥

Long before they became two of the biggest names in electronic music, this was Dutch trance history in the making.
