India. Her voice is just iconic. One of those voices you recognize immediately.

I’ve always loved how her career connects different worlds too, from house music to becoming a huge name in salsa.

A few cassettes from my collection “Love & Happiness” “The Lover Who Rocks You” and “I Can’t Get No Sleep.”

House to salsa and everything in between. That voice though🔥 by @housefunatik

September 1986, as House Music was beginning to make noise in the UK.

In September 1986, UK music magazine Record Mirror devoted a feature to the emerging sound of Chicago House Music, introducing British readers to Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, Marshall Jefferson, J.M. Silk, Darryl Pandy, Chip E. and the labels helping carry the music beyond Chicago.

The feature captures house music as it was still underground and unfamiliar enough that a major British music magazine felt the need to explain what it was, but the sound was already beginning to crossover through records like “Love Can’t Turn Around” and “Jack Your Body.”

Swipe through for a look at Record Mirror in the fall of 1986, when House was beginning to get on the radar in the UK alongside some of the other sounds and faces occupying pop music at the time.

Aretha Franklin, Debbie Harry, Eurythmics, Dead or Alive, The Housemartins (with a future Fatboy Slim) and a new sound arriving from Chicago… House by @housefunatik

Before “West End Girls” became a worldwide hit, there was the original 1984 version recorded in New York with producer Bobby Orlando.

Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe look back at how “West End Girls” initially went largely unnoticed in the UK, and how its unexpected popularity on Los Angeles radio helped lead to the version we all know today.

Bobby O. might not be a familiar name to casual dance music listeners, but his influence on the sound of early ’80s electronic dance music, Hi-NRG and synth-pop was enormous.

Swipe through to hear the original 1984 recording of “West End Girls,” followed by a clip of Bobby O.’s own “She Has a Way”. There’s a lot more to Bobby Orlando’s story, and I’ll be dedicating a post to him soon. by @housefunatik

Deep Dish (Dubfire & Sharam) talking in the 1990s about how technology was making it easier to produce music, leading to an oversaturated market.
That problem feels bigger than ever now, with generative AI making it even easier to flood the market.

Released in 1994, “The Dream” was one of the early tracks that helped put Deep Dish on the international house map.
Their own label Yoshitoshi became home to several ’90s dance classics and helped shape the sound of underground house music. by @housefunatik

In the 1990s and early 2000s these were some of the DJs who connected the dots back to the city that started house music. They toured constantly, bringing the Chicago house sound to clubs and parties and turning a whole lot of party people into house heads along the way. by @housefunatik
