When planning to meet we agreed that in the heart of Southall was the best option. Breakfast at Shahanshah it is. Desi cha and two paronte later, I was taken on an alternative walking history tour of the ends.

Before heading out, of course we discussed all things Southall. We compared notes on growing up, leaving and coming back. ‘There’s a magnetic pull here’ says Manu, creative director and founder of @houseofaeiou a lifestyle place for clothing, art and books. Also a producer and creative consultant for the new exhibition about Southall at Gunnersbury Park Museum, a festival producer for New Gen festival and our newly appointed Culture and Community Officer at Ealing Council.

Head over to my substack to read more about my day out with Manu, discussing the arts, culture, gentrification and the future of Southall.

It’s in safe hands!

“If you care about your community, invest in it.” — @houseofaeiou

That’s the view of Manu Nandha, founder of the House of A.E.I.O.U. – a creative platform based in the west London neighbourhood of Southall. Nandha’s platform regularly hosts music events and panel talks for its community in a bid to shine a light on the creative talent that the local area has to offer.

For Nandha, putting Southall on the map and showcasing its incredibly talented roster of tailors, artists and designers is one of his biggest goals. Along with that, it’s creating opportunities for the people in his community and convincing them that you don’t need to pack up and move to somewhere like east London to be creative.

“Someone one day decided that Brick Lane and Hackney were going to be very cool. And they’ve become very cool. Now why couldn’t you make your own area cool? Talk about yourself, talk about your own experiences, talk about your community’s experiences, and really celebrate that,” Nandha tells Hypebeast.

Off the back of Nandha’s involvement in an all-new exhibition detailing the history of Southall, Hypebeast spoke to the founder about the importance of community and investing in your local area.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Manja Launch last week ✨ what a better way to celebrate the journey of the process of making such a piece, than with the very thing that inspired it?

Our hearts are still full from all the connections that were made and all the lovely feedback, and engagement with the themes of the piece through the workshops, readings and of course, getting involved in playing yourself.

We loved seeing the @kedamusic electronic tabla out on the Broadway - Kuljit’s own invention, of which his teaching resources inspired some of the graphical notation on the piece itself, in collaboration with a killer set from @stripezz.z and impromptu Chacha Dholie b2b. Plus a #JASAfterhours that lasted as long as the speakers did 😭🤍 Southall 4eva. taken in The Broadway, Southall by @houseofaeiou

“Together” - New work for @featherstonehigh with @_pablothomas 🙌🏽

Taking things back to schools, in the spaces where these very students from Southall will shape our community in the future was such an inspiring and rewarding experience.

We came up with a design co-curated with the students and staff through workshops that celebrate how they use their time to “play”, all whilst exploring what makes the young people proud of being part of Featherstone and how their unique identity is one to be shared
and celebrated.

It’s been another exciting journey working @_pablothomas @real_lours @nachowelles 🤘🏽

For every data centre and development that gets approved it feels like our infrastructure is being compromised but through initiatives like these we are able to reclaim our story, educate and redefine our future opportunities one step at a time, so thanks again to @_pablothomas and @featherstonehigh for the opportunity and realising the importance of this piece and how it has the power to create real impact and change. taken in Featherstone High School by @houseofaeiou

Introducing: THE BROADWAY MANJA

Installed on The Broadway is a public artwork designed by Shirin Naveed, as part of the UKSPF Destination Southall Public Art Project.

Inspired by Manja - traditional rope beds central to South Asian domestic life - this work was developed with a multi-generational group of people with different ages with a connection to Southall. Etched into the surface are song lyrics and a graphic score developed by the artist, tracing histories of migration and diverse musical cultures.

So many people to shoutout to the making of this piece, it’s been nothing but a labour of love. Huge moment and landmark for @jas_musicals who have been instrumental in this process and supporting the vision and artistry always. Thank you for trusting me 🙏

Introducing the “Southall stories” Art Trail Map.

Bringing you closer to the incredible artists and their installations as well as a trail to get you moving and exploring the spaces adjacent to the installations, thoughtfully designed and illustrated by the incredible @kushiaania 🙌🏽

It has been so much fun and super insightful working on this with @kushiaania @wearemushstudio and we are super grateful to you for bringing the vision and concept to life and giving this map of Southall so much time and dedication.

It is in its final stages and almost ready for print and there will be versions of the map available online via the culture site as well as stencil versions to colour in and a black & white version available soon too.

Well done to everyone involved, another great achievement and milestone for this special project thanks to the work of the entire project team.

So much work goes on behind the scenes with all the different elements of this project and it has been a remarkable team effort once again to get to this stage.

Thanks to @villiershighschoollondon for providing critical input into the design during the early stages of its development and @_sm.visuals for continuing to document the entire project so authentically.
