NEW COLLECTION - Al Mare

The first time I went to a beach in Italy I was an older teen— I was hungry, sunburnt, forgot my sunglasses in the car and got a chair massage (😒). This was Sicily (Cefalu) in 2006, and I wouldn’t call it a success. A year later I went to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre in flip flops like a crazy person. The trek to the beach was well over an hour and by the time we reached the water I think I had worn through a new pair of Havianas (they were still very “in” at the time— or at least I’ll keep telling myself that). The looks I got were…memorable.

The varied beaches of Italy are fabulous, layered— and can be a bit intimidating. From Forte dei Marmi to Calamosche, over the years of visiting, I think I have finally found my pace. Here are a few pieces that inspired me, and celebrate life by the seaside. These days my vintage tote is always well packed, but it’s the ambiance of freedom, relaxation, beauty and playfulness that keeps me coming back. These pieces celebrate that idea both literally and figuratively— from the people, history, experiences and textures evoked al mare. So if you find yourself on a beach this summer— I say try not to think too much and enjoy— and as they say in Italy, buon bagno.

Someone asked me the other day what inspired the aesthetic for this little digital shop. Here is my response and a new collection built around it.

‘Dinner at Nonna’s if Nonna’s a stylish maximalist who lives in Palermo and spent most of her life traveling. Still smokes 100s, religiously drinks an amaro after a plate of pasta, loves a post-dinner game of backgammon, throws salt over her left shoulder to ward off bad luck and now tries to pawn off all her goodies to you when you visit.’

Price list:

- Large 1970s Handpainted ‘Spaghetti’ Serving Dish, Made in Italy: $115 - SOLD
- Pair of heavy 1950s gold-rimmed cognac snifters: $80 (with tray and decanter: $105)
- 1950s MCM Crystal Table Lighter: $69 (needs new wick/ fuel to properly function)
- Vintage 1960s Greek Taverna Individual Wine Carafe, Sourced in Greece: $68
- Vintage Patinated Tray, circa 1960- Made in Italy: $59 — SOLD
- Set of Four Small Vintage Glass Gold Rimmed Amaro Glasses: $75 — SOLD
- Vintage 1960s Portable Multi-Game Case (Backgammon, Dominoes, Chess, Checkers): $65 — SOLD
