Join Houston Botanic Garden on Texas Arbor Day — Friday 11/6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. — for an evening of art, nature, and poetry with Dr. Lindsay Gary. Enjoy a discussion and reading of AncesTREE, her evocative collection of poems inspired by trees, the natural world, and ancestral connections. The program will consist of a social mix-and-mingle, a moderated discussion, a poetry reading, and an audience Q+A.

Later Texas Arbor Day weekend, return to the Garden, inspired by Dr. Gary's work, for Standing Tall: A Texas Tree Festival. This full-day, family-friendly event on Sunday 11/8, will feature a kids’ zone with tree-themed crafts and activities, guided walks to view and learn more about native trees around the Garden’s 132-acre site, a marketplace including food vendors, live entertainment, and more.

For Houston Botanic Garden’s (@houstonbotanic ) annual luncheon, Magic of Mycelium, honoring landscape architect Johnny Steele (johnnysteeledesign), six months of preparation brought over 80 edible mushrooms to life, courtesy of Benjamin and Farris . Guests took home three varieties with accompanying recipes, while a fairy-tale stage came alive with spectacular fungi, lush moss, and three six-foot hanging ferns. Our designers juxtaposed the soft color palette of cream, light pink, and brown with black-and-white gingham, reminding us that even the most manicured of landscapes could use a little fun and spontaneity.

Marigolds are hitting full bloom for Día de los Muertos on Nov 1 & 2, the traditional Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates the lives of family and friends who have gone before us. Marigolds, known as cempasúchil, originate in Mexico and Central America and symbolize the sacred bridge that connects the living to the dead. Their vibrant orange and yellow colors represent the sun, and their strong, earthy fragrance is believed to awaken the spirits and guide them from Mictlán (the Aztec underworld) back to their family homes during Día de los Muertos.

Several varieties of this meaningful blossom — including an uninterrupted 400 ft stretch along Botanic Lane and breezy baskets on the Sims Bayou Bridge — are reaching their peak bloom. Don’t miss your opportunity to see them in person.

Even in a serene setting like the Houston Botanic Garden, it’s easy to get swept up in our thoughts.

Join Katy Dimple Manning, LCSW-S, on a walking meditation that will bring intuition and intention to your Garden visit. Learn grounding and mindfulness skills, practice them together, and connect with one another. Katy will provide an overview of different ways to approach walking meditation and give attendees the chance to break off on their own or stick with the group for more structure.

This Sunday, don’t just visit the Garden — experience it. Tickets are available at hbg.org.

Calling all Spooky Pooches!

The final dog day of the season is upon us this Halloween (Saturday, 10/31), when dogs in costume can visit the Garden at no charge, and owners in costumes, as well, will receive a $5 discount off standard admission. Discounts are granted at the ticket window upon arrival. Family-friendly costumes, please, and nothing with real or imitation weapons.

Dogs not in costume are welcome too, although a $5 dog ticket will apply. Members receive complimentary dog admission, based on membership level.

Costume or not, with a pet(s) or without, a visit to the Garden is a real Halloween treat.

Special thanks to our Spooky Pooch sponsor @thecornervet_bellaire and our photo star @enzopawventures and his humans.

Did you know there are two kinds of activity packs available for visitors of all ages to borrow upon entry into the Garden, and they’re completely FREE? Check one out from the Garden Shop on your next visit, and be sure to return it on your way out, so it will be ready for the next guest.

Watch the full video to discover what’s inside the Sensory Kit and the Garden Explorer Pack. A limited number of these packs are available for use, so make sure to ask a member of the Visitor Experience staff about availability on your next visit.

This year marks the centennial of Route 66, the iconic road that spans 2,448 miles across eight states, from Chicago to Los Angeles — including right through the Texas Panhandle.

The Garden’s very own iconic “road” is quietly growing along one of our most traveled pathways, evoking highway shoulders across the Lone Star State. Known as the Texas Road Trip, this new planting brings wildflowers and native grasses from the ten Texas Ecoregions to distinct beds between the Culinary Garden and Sims Bayou. Meant to be mow-able, like the wildflowers on the side of the highway, these blooms show off the diversity of Texas flora, from the Piney Woods to the Trans-Pecos.

Pictured is one of Route 66’s Texas Ecoregions, the High Plains, which is blooming with Plains coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria) and Cowpen daisy (Verbesina encelioides), among others.

Long roads and long drives have enchanted us for more than 100 years, and now, just a short stroll within Houston’s Garden can also bring the whole state into view.
