In the Studio with Hoxton Gardenware

Once known as London’s ‘nursery district’, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Hoxton in the city’s East End was filled with market gardens and plant sellers that supplied trees and flowers to the growing metropolis. Then a semi-rural area beyond the urban core, its clean air and open spaces made it ideal for cultivating plants and many horticultural businesses thrived.

As the capital expanded during the Industrial Revolution, these nurseries gradually disappeared, replaced by housing and production, but the area’s green past remains a fascinating footnote in Hoxton’s history.
It’s that history that inspires the team at Hoxton Gardenware, a youth-led, not-for-profit enterprise producing small-batch terracotta plant pots using traditional studio pottery techniques.

Tomorrow is our spring sale at Troytown!
We’ve got loads of small- midsize plant pots the interns made during the first few months of their training that would be perfect for potting on any seedlings you may be growing at the moment :) Larger pots and toasty slipware also available to bring a touch of colour and art into your homes or gardens!

For the last couple of months I’ve been running the @hoxton.gardenware scheme training up four lovely interns in wheel throwing terracotta pots. We’re manning the @troy.town shop this Sunday 10-6pm selling our pots as well as Troytown staples yunomi, mugs, oribe vases and even some t-shirts. I’ll be there with some of the interns so please come quiz them about the ceramic process aha We’ll have the fire going, music on, maybe even some biscuits out 👀 so please pop by if you’re in need (or just want to hang out and look at the axolotl) of some plant pots or beaut gas fired homewares. NB. We will deleting this account soon and merging it with @troy.town so please follow us there (too much to keep up with managing two accs) but for those who have been asking about new gardenware please read below!
Three exciting things happening at the pottery this weekend 8th and 9th of June. A special sale of c.1970s wood-fired pottery from Japan, a sale of new gardenware from our @hoxton.gardenware youth project, and an open studio and workshop for families as part of @hoxton_trust ‘s open garden.

𝘈 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘺 𝘴𝘬𝘺 is a special sale of 120 pieces of 1970s woodfired Shigaraki yaki from a studio clearance in Japan. Though the maker is still unknown, this is a rare opportunity to buy this sort of ware within Europe. The pieces range from large vases to small items of teaware, beer cups, etc, and some have a distinctively European-modernist style, which is highly unusual for this type of firing. All works will be online and available to buy in the Troy Town shop from Friday evening.

A sale of new pieces from our @hoxton.gardenware youth project presents the first opportunity to buy work from this project in over 2 years. @hoxton.gardenware is a paid training programme for local young people, training them to produce and sell artisanal garden pottery using techniques associated with studio pottery. This time round, we are producing leadglazed slipware garden pottery alongside plain terracotta. These pots are mainly available in-studio only, but some of the slipware pots will be available to order online for collection.

As well as these sales and our open studio, there will be a clay making workshop for families and children in the @hoxton_trust community garden, using clay to make models of strange animals from E.W. Cooke’s victorian-era book ‘Grotesque animals’. Please join us at any point during the day! The pottery will be open 11-6pm Saturday and Sunday.
