Come to Beyond Words with me 📚 Comment “HPL” and I’ll send you the link!!

Hartford Public Library’s annual fundraiser is november 5, and this year the Hartford History Center is being celebrated alongside America’s 250th.

and i’m really excited to learn more about the History Center because i have questions 😂

i want to see if i can find my father’s obituary from 1996 and i want to learn more about my family members who came to Hartford from Puerto Rico. especially because so many of the people i would’ve asked about our family history have passed away.

the History Center has old newspapers, photos, city records and archives that can help us learn more about our families, our neighborhoods and Hartford. **and if you want to research your own family, you can access Ancestry for free at the library.**

individual tickets for Beyond Words are limited, so if you work somewhere with a community engagement, philanthropy or giving budget, send this to your employer and ask them to support HPL. you can even copy + paste this:

“Hi! Hartford Public Library is hosting its annual Beyond Words fundraiser on November 5. This year’s event celebrates the Hartford History Center and the library’s work preserving our city’s history while providing free resources and programs to the Hartford community. Would we consider purchasing tickets or supporting the fundraiser as an organization? I’d love to attend and represent our team. Here’s the event information: [link]”

and whether you make it to Beyond Words or not, go visit the Hartford History Center. i’ll let you know what i find 👀

It’s Election Day! Get out and vote!

Marilyn Parkinson Thrall’s The Art of Perseverance suffragist sculpture honors the first women who registered to vote in Hartford in 1920 after the passage of the 19th Amendment.

The skirt is made from reproductions of Hartford’s 1920 voter registration cards, a subset of the larger Hartford Town and City Clerk Archive held in the Library’s Hartford History Center at the Downtown Library.

On November 5th, Hartford Public Library is hosting Beyond Words, its biggest fundraising event of the year, celebrating the impact libraries have on our communities.

This year’s featured guest is Norah O’Donnell, Emmy Award-winning journalist and author of We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America.

Her book tells the stories of women who helped shape American history, many of whom you’ve probably never heard of. I recently started listening to the audiobook, and it’s genuinely fascinating.

Th#connecticut s evening supports Hartford Public Library and the work it does to make education, resources, and opportunities accessible to our community.
