Two commonly ordered fertility tests, two very different pieces of the picture.

An HSG (Hysterosalpingography (HSG) test) is a structural test. It helps your physician understand the physical pathway for pregnancy by showing whether the uterine cavity is normal and if the fallopian tubes are open or blocked. This information is often an important first step in determining whether natural conception is possible or if IVF may be the recommended path.

An AMH test (Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH)) is a blood test that helps assess ovarian reserve. It gives your care team insight into how the ovaries may respond to stimulation medications and is used to help individualize IVF treatment planning. It does not measure egg quality, but it does help guide expectations around response.

In relation to IVF, these tests serve different roles. AMH helps your physician tailor a stimulation protocol to you. HSG helps determine whether IVF is needed by evaluating whether there are any tubal factors affecting conception.
