Happy Heavenly 39th Birthday Jonny ❤️‍🩹
.
.

For your birthday this year, I guess I can proudly say that we went back to NZ and brought you back a gift! Your official NZ Bravery medal- one you gave your life for saving another soul. One you should have been lucky enough to accept it yourself.
.
.

It was one of the hardest things I had to go through again but I know it’s worth every tear I shed and every ache my heart felt.
.
.

Sometimes grief feels like a race with no finish line. There’s no ending, if you’re lucky enough you get some water given and some people cheering you on. But you keep on going and going because forward is the only way you know how.
.
.

I hope you know I’m taking care of the girl you loved. Every time I think of you- I also think of the people you left me with, how we’re all trying to fill the void you left, stitching each other’s hearts best way we know how. I look for you in every joy I feel, every kindness I get. We all miss you so much with each passing day, the world just isn’t the same with one less hero- one less loving soul, we love you Jonny ❤️‍🩹 by @hsu_26

Today has been bittersweet & my heart is so full.
.
Full of gratitude to NZ Government for recognising Jonny as a recipient for a bravery medal as part of 2025 Special Honours List with 2026 ceremony.
.
No amount of medal will make up for this man we all loved and lost in 2023, but I’m grateful it will shine a further light on his courage for people who didn’t get to know him and learn who Jonny was to us in our hearts. ❤️‍🩹
.
.
Below is my statement I wrote for NZ media for him.
.
.
🌻 “It is my truest honour to be receiving this New Zealand Bravery Award on behalf of Jonathan Young from the NZ government. I would like to firstly thank all the help I received from all of you especially the NZ police woman who helped me survive the day I lost him. Without her incredible kindness & sympathy, I wouldn’t have known how I got through that day alone in a foreign country having lost my fiancé and my best friend of over 15years.

A part of me wishes that it was Jonny himself accepting this award. It’s an honour of my life to have been loved by this man who had always put others first- the reason why we’re all here and he isn’t. Jonny was the kindest and most loving fiancé, son, brother, uncle and a caring cat dad to our orange boy Benny.

For Jonny, the 35 years he got to live on this earth- he had always lived the right way and did all the right things. He was smart, sporty, kind, helpful and strong inside and out- a text book perfect man. All those of us who have loved and known him will never recover from having lost him and we have had to learn to heal this big void he left in us through his memories and the love he left us with.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all the parents how important water safety is for children and to be wary in foreign environments where you’re not familiar with.

Jonny loved living. In a way, he died for his love of living. For a boy to continue on living, in return he gave away his. When I think of Jonny, I will forever think of courage, kindness and most of all selflessness. He will forever hold the biggest space in our hearts and forever be missed and remembered for his bravery.” - Hsu Tin ❤️‍🩹 taken in Carlingford, New South Wales, Australia by @hsu_26

I have just said
something
ridiculous to you
and in response,

your glorious laughter.
These are the days
the sun
is swimming back

to the east
and the light on the water
gleams
as never, it seems, before.

I can’t remember
every spring,
I can’t remember
everything–

so many years!
Are the morning kisses
the sweetest
or the evenings

or the inbetweens?
All I know
is that “thank you” should appear
somewhere.

So, just in case
I can’t find
the perfect place–
“Thank you, thank you.” - Mary Oliver 🌻 taken in Sydney, Australia by @hsu_26

Happy 8th Birthday Benny Boy!
.
.

I love you more and more each day. How did I get so lucky with the best cat, EVER!! You’re the best thing Jonny left me with and we both have gone through each good and bad day side by side together. I never have to be strong with you and you always sit beside me in my despair and nothing calm me more than your loud purrs and your snoring. Here’s to many more years with you my fluffy sweet boy! 😸💞 taken in Sydney, Australia by @hsu_26

I don’t remember the exact year I met Josh, but I do remember thinking we would be good friends for a long time. Little did I know, we would be more than good but great.

Over the years I’ve known Josh, we both experienced many ups and downs in our careers and our personal lives. We shared so many big fat tears as well as lots of belly-aching laughters. We also tried being in a long distance friendship and without a fail, he sent me at least one reel per day when he went away for one year exchange in Switzerland. There wasn’t a day we didn’t communicate.

Even with so many small and big changes in our lives, one thing constant was our friendship. And I hold onto that very dearly. Every hangout, every catch up- they always feel joyous and fun even if we both or one of us are sad. Especially then because we would make each other laugh so hard that our sad tears eventually turn into tears of laughter so even for one evening- we forget our problems and our glasses are half full again.

But today- Josh’s glass is filled to the max! A published author aka Joshua Hortinela! My talented dear friend. His debut romance novel ‘Hate You To Love You’ is out in the world today and I’m just so proud. HYTLY is a testament to his hard works over the years from being a terrific bookseller, a dedicated content creator, a lover of romance books & all things nostalgic and best of all- a loving friend and supporter to many many people in the industry.

HYTLY will fill you with all things life has to offer us. You will laugh, you will cry and you will believe in love again. I don’t mean just romantic love- love in friendship, love in family and what it is all mean at the end when all things are said and done. What we do with the love we’re left with.

I wish you the biggest success with your debut Josh and not just for your book- but for your heart. I hope that Carlos in you would achieve all things in life he fully deserves especially in matters of the heart Xx taken in Sydney, Australia by @hsu_26
