Whether you are a football fan or not, a Ronaldo fan or not, what this man has done for world sport is beyond what I can put into words—but I’ll try.

Cristiano Ronaldo transcends football. He has shown multiple generations what hard work, discipline, belief, confidence, and relentless dedication truly look like. I can say this with complete confidence because, as a swimmer, I owe him so much.

From a young age, I wanted to be like Ronaldo. I couldn’t do it on the football pitch, so I did it in the pool. I wanted to carry that same mentality, that same hunger, that same refusal to settle. He taught me that if I wanted to achieve my dreams, I had to earn them every single day. This mentality is what led me to win an Olympic gold medal.

No matter the task, no matter the pressure, no matter the criticism, he always stepped onto the pitch with confidence. This is a man who never shied away from the toughest matches, the biggest moments, or the highest expectations. He left it all on the pitch every single time.

You can measure Ronaldo’s success in goals, trophies, and Ballon d’Ors, but I like to measure it in a different way as well. I measure it by the influence he has had on the world of sport, the standards he has set, and the mindset he has instilled in millions of young people around the world. I measure it by the countless athletes who wake up earlier, train harder, and push further because of the example he set. I measure it by the belief he gave us, that greatness is not given. It is built through consistency, sacrifice, and an unbreakable will. If it weren’t for his example, I would have never made it this far in my own sport.

World Cup or not, you have been and always will be my GOAT.
