Unleashing the power of data through the Ocean Data Platform, and working closely with REV Ocean to improve the health of our ocean
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
🐋 Join us on 21 October for a webinar on the WSC Whale Chart, the global mapping of measures to reduce harm to whales from vessels, now available in a new digital format on our Ocean Data Platform.

It maps all known mandatory and voluntary governmental measures worldwide, including speed restrictions, routing measures, areas to be avoided and measures addressing underwater radiated noise, making them easier to explore, keep up to date and use across digital tools.

Wei Jun Mun (WSC Director of Public Policy) and our Geospatial Software Engineer Max Romagnoli will give a practical walkthrough and discussion.

Ever wondered what it’s like to work with real ocean data? Or how to bring it into your classroom? Meet ODP Academy 💻

This autumn, around 80 marine ecology students at the University of Bergen are learning just that. Now we’re opening it up to more learners and educators.

The course contents hands-on modules on the Ocean Data Platform where you learn to explore, analyse and share real ocean data, in Python, R, QGIS or ArcGIS.

For students: build real data skills and finish with a project of your own.

For educators: bring real-world ocean data into your teaching. We’ll help you fit it into your course.

Already getting great feedback from students and professionals.

Get in touch to find out more and register your interest.

Our oceans are home to some of the most extraordinary creatures 🐋. Protecting them is a serious responsibility. For shipping, that means finding practical ways to reduce our impact on whales and the marine environment.

From quieter ships and smarter voyage planning to better whale detection and new digital tools, innovation and action are helping make a difference. The new digital WSC Whale Chart is an important part of this work, making global whale protection measures more accessible to the maritime community. by @hubocean

🌊 Applications are now open for "Working with Ocean Data in the Cloud – Marine Spatial Planning Edition", an online training course delivered by @universidadeufsc, HUB Ocean, and #SeaSketch.

The 9 week course starts on 27 August 2026 and is designed for students, researchers, government practitioners, and ocean professionals across Latin America and beyond.

Through a combination of self-paced learning, live sessions, and a hands-on capstone project, participants will learn how to:

✅ Access and explore ocean datasets on the #OceanDataPlatform
✅ Analyze spatial data using Python, R, and GIS tools
✅ Design and evaluate marine spatial planning scenarios with #SeaSketch
✅ Use AI-assisted coding tools to support data workflows
✅ Apply real-world ocean data to regional governance challenges

No programming experience is required. Participants who complete the course will receive a #certificate jointly issued by Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, HUB Ocean, and SeaSketch.

📍 Fully online
📅 Starts 27 August 2026
🎓 Open to MSc and PhD students, early-career researchers, government managers, and ocean professionals
🌎 Priority given to participants from Brazil and the wider Latin American and Caribbean region

Creating a shared understanding of whale–ship collision risk is key to enabling better decisions and meaningful action across conservation, policy, and industry.

Last week, we introduced a new whale–ship strike hotspot dataset based on Nisi et al. (2024). In this video, we show you how you can explore and visualize it on the Ocean Data Platform, ready for you combine with other data, and use in your own analysis.

The ocean breathes life into this planet. And yet, in the smallest sliver of Earth's history, we’ve pushed a perfectly balanced system to the very edge of what it can handle. Our ocean is in crisis.

As the world works towards protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, knowledge must guide action. That means identifying the places, ecosystems and species that need protection most, and building decisions on credible data.

HUB Ocean helps make ocean data more accessible - through broad-based data unlocking and through building the digital infrastructure needed to turn data into impact.

Together, we close the gap between what we know and what we do.

Illuminate the ocean. Protect it. Restore it.

June 1st is #WorldReefAwarenessDay.

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor - some estimates put the figure at <0.1 %. They support 25% of all marine species. Nearly one billion people depend on them. And they provide $9.9 trillion in ecosystem services every year.

They are one of the ocean’s most vital ecosystems. And yet - by 2100, current projections say coral reef habitats could be gone – by warming, acidification and other threats working together.

If nothing changes.

But things can change. On this #WorldReefDay, we're asking: what does the right data need to unlock, and for whom, to actually turn this around?

We got a close-up look at a unique citizen science program aboard the historic tall ship Fullriggeren Sørlandet.

The students shared how the project works in real life: rough weather, handwritten notes, limited connectivity — and a constantly improving observation process.

Together with The Ocean Cleanup, Ecowende, Healthy Seas and partners across the room, the discussion focused on one thing: how do we turn these observations into data that creates real value?

Several next steps emerged, including technology to help automate #plastic observations along the vessel’s route. HUB Ocean will also help structure and standardize the data flows as partners begin testing practical pilot use cases.

The raw data is already out there. Now it needs to become usable. Onwards. by @hubocean
