On Saturday (19th September), Huddersfield Pride Queer Collective (HPQC), members of the LGBTQ+ community, and our Big Flag marched with over 300 people as part of Unity Day, in solidarity united against growing hatred, racism and division. The day highlighted both the diversity of our Kirklees community and the strength and joy in unity and solidarity. This was especially important for HPQC as it came days after our flag policy protest outside Huddersfield Town Hall on Wednesday. We continued to fly our Pride Flags and demand that the Pride Flag be flown on civic buildings, along with other flags that the new Reform cabinet policy looks to remove. A huge thank you to all who showed support for HPQC on the day, joined the lively LGBTQ+ bloc, visited our stalls, flew the flag, and donated towards the Huddersfield Pride 2027 collection. Join us at Huddersfield Unity Day tomorrow (19th Sept), starting at 11am from the Greenhead Park Bandstand for a pre-meet and placard making session before general assembly from 12pm to set off from Greenhead Park War Memorial from 12:30pm. It is a day where communities across Huddersfield, including the LGBTQ+ community, will come together in solidarity to march against the growing hatred and division in Huddersfield and to unite against the far right. Join the LGBTQ+ Bloc if you identify as LGBTQ+ or support the community. Be sure to bring all the pride flags to once again show that the Pride Flag should be flown in Huddersfield and across Kirklees. by @huddersfieldpride
Yesterday saw over 100 people gather outside the town hall for Kirklees Council's first full council meeting since a Reform leader and cabinet was elected. Huddersfield Pride Queer Collective and allies brought their pride flags, chants and energy to protest the Reform Leader's decison to remove the Pride Flag, amongst other flags, from the Council's list of "approved flags", as well as showing solidarity with the other causes outside. There were speeches from us, @huddsqueersocial, Green Cllr @greenpartytoby and Lisa about the Unity Day March this Saturday. It was a strong day of defiance and it was great to see so many people and so many pride flags at the Town Hall. This protest was, of course, overseen by our Big Flag, which was hung opposite the town hall in all its 10m by 6m glory. Thank you to everyone who came down and spoke and showed solidarity with our protest against the flag policy and all the other causes spoken about outside the town hall. We had plenty of people show an interest in joining Huddersfield Pride Queer Collective and even began collecting some donations to make Huddersfield Pride 2027 happen. On to the Unity Day March, which is taking place this Saturday, beginning at Greenhead Park. See you there! Photo credit to @zak_brierley by @huddersfieldpride

Huddersfield Pride Queer Collective is angered to hear Kirklees Council's Reform Leader has chosen to not include the Pride Flag on the list of "approved" flags permitted to be flown from its civic buildings in Kirklees. The Pride Flag is a symbol of dignity and respect, representing the ongoing fight for equality and has been flown across Kirklees for years with no issue. Choosing not to fly the Pride Flag undermines the council's efforts to support the LGBTQ+ community and cultivate acceptance and inclusivity within Kirklees, instead creating a climate of uncertainty and division. This policy's impact isn' t solely felt by the LGBTQ+ community but also by other communities and causes that have been represented by flags flown in solidarity from civic buildings. This is an obvious attack on the LGBTQ+ community and we question why this was one of the first decision the Reform leader has made since coming into power. Instead of prioritising and implimenting actual changes and policies to improve the lives of Kirklees residents, this policy wastes everyone's time. Exceptions to this policy are now at the sole discretion of the leader of the council. Which flags get flown are now subject to the whim and bias of one individual and implimenting this policy, without any consulation, is anti-democratic and needlessly centralising. We would hope that, when requested, the Pride Flag would be approved by the leader, especially considering Huddersfield' s place in LGBTQ+ history, holding the 1st UK Pride outside of London. Huddersfield Pride Queer Collective will not stand by while the council turns their back on LGBTQ+ people. We will not accept division and intolerance disguised as neutrality. We believe in a borough and country where everyone is free to live openly, equally and without fear. Join Huddersfield Pride Queer Collective and the wider LGBTQ+ community as we bring our Big Pride Flag down to Huddersfield Town Hall on the 16th Sept from 4:30pm to protest this decision. Bring your flags and your voice and demand the leader of the council approves the flying of the Pride Flag on civic buildings. Join the LGBTQ+ Bloc on Saturday 19th September for Unity Day. A day for communities across Huddersfield and beyond to stand up to the growing hatred, division and racism on our streets and unite against the far right. With support across local political movements, including the Green Party, Huddersfield Freedom for Palestine, Stand Up to Racism and the Trades Unions, it is set to be a day like no other. A day like this is especially important now that Reform is the largest group in the council and we have a Reform Council leader. We will be meeting at 12pm in Greenhead Park for speeches, followed by a march through the town centre and a rally with more speeches at the end. We would love to see as many LGBTQ+ people there as possible! Keep an eye out for updates about the placard making workshops and stalls we have planned in the run-up to the event. Seventy LGBTQ+ activists and allies gathered at Market Square in Huddersfield, on Wednesday 5th August, to hold a protest in defiance of the unworkable and unenforceable EHRC Code of Practice that came into effect on that day and to demand dignity for Trans+ and non-binary people. We heard speeches, songs, and poetry from a range of Trans, non-binary people, and allies highlighting how the guidance will impact them and those they care about. These protests showed just how strong and alive the Queer community of Huddersfield is, and we're not going anywhere! A special thanks to @hive_coop for hosting the 30 strong banner making session beforehand, @ding_theking_frisby for the performances, @unisontheunion for the union support, @huddsqueersocial and @sewqueerhuddersfield for all their help with our new banner and everyone else who took part on the day. Thanks to @zak_brierley for photos of the protest. To quote Ding Frisby: "This is what community looks like!!!" Continue to pee where you want, look after one another, and keep on fighting for Queer and Trans+ rights. A strong display of community at Huddersfield town centre today, as the LGBTQIA+ community banded together to oppose the new unworkable and inhuman government guidelines regardings trans people in public spaces. Thank you to @hive_coop cafe for hosting the space for placard making before this protest ♡ by @huddersfieldpride
Our static protest against the EHRC code of practice is tomorrow. In response to a number of frequently asked questions we wanted give some further information about the day and what to expect. We hope to see as many of you join us tomorrow (either at @hive_coop from 4pm or from 5:30pm at Market Square) as we make our voices heard 🏳️‍⚧️ by @huddersfieldpride
The EHRC has drawn up transphobic and exclusionary guidance that will segregate and push trans people out of public life. It treats trans people as second class citizens, treating them as a “third sex” leaving them without a toilet to legally and safely use, and the spaces they can use are often locked behind radar keys. The guidance is unworkable and unenforceable and was still passed despite 167 MPs signing a motion to dismiss the guidance. This new code will come into effect on August 5th and we’re going to mark that day with a protest. We will be meeting at 5:30pm at Market Square for a static protest, with a placard making session from 4pm at @hive_coop Let’s call on government, venues, businesses and our unions to resist, reject and defy the guidance. Trans dignity matters, trans rights matter. by @huddersfieldpride
