“Are Bull D*kes Really Transvestites?” by Bebe Scarpie from Drag vol 3 no 10 (1973). This is a photoshoot and article from Club 82 here in New York a few years after Stonewall. It felt like a real find because there’s very little record of the people who are often categorized as merely drag kings as actually being transsexuals! It’s a shame these photographs are not captioned. I think one of these folks is Storme DeLarverie (picture 2?). There needs to be a lot more (read: any) research into transsexuals and other people who would probably be seen as transgender who were in this scene. All of the work I have seen thus far implies that folks in this community were essentially cisgender which is clearly not the case.

I found this on the Digital Transgender Archive, look up Drag Magazine and you’ll find the issue :) by @hugalocalmicrobe

That Show! with Johnny Science was a public access television show on Manhattan News Network that (likely) aired from 1998-2001, initially on Fridays at 10pm. Johnny covered a range of topics, including the local drag king scene in New York (then in a period of transition and looming decline from its heyday in the early and mid-1990s due to the repression of the Giuliani administration), interviews with gender non-conforming people, avant-garde sexual art, and the controversial transsexual adult film that he directed and wrote music for, Linda/Les and Annie. You can watch all of them at https://bit.ly/thatshowjs. I am still processing a few more files, including a long interview with the anthropologist now known as Lucas Hasten, and trying to determine whether some of the episodes I have are fully duplicates (he liked to reuse footage). I could say about a thousand more things about That Show! but what I would like to say most is that I really, really want people to watch it. I am hoping to do screenings this summer when I get a minute to catch my breath. by @hugalocalmicrobe

At the LGBT center I found some Greek LGBT advocacy magazines from the 1980s! I requested these to send pictures to a friend of mine who is Greek and does not live in New York. If anyone speaks Greek, I think it could be really valuable for someone to go to the Center and translate these articles which seem to not really exist anywhere else, including in most Greek libraries. There is a lot of work to be done on the history of queer movements outside of the United States and very often the resources to do that work are here. One project I would like to do in the future is fully digitize these, because there’s only 5 of them in total, but I haven’t had time with the *waves in the general direction of everything.* by @hugalocalmicrobe

Pictures taken only moments before disaster or: I’ve become totally obsessed with jet-setting messy lesbian party promoter Caroline Clone who ruled the club world for a decade in London, San Francisco, Miami, and New York, and made enemies everywhere she went, and then disappeared with her pseudonym into the night in the early 90s. Last weekend I opened a box of NYC lesbian party rags that was taped shut 30 years ago at the LGBT National Archive and I’m slowly losing grip of denial that I’m going to write a book about the downtown scene someday but it’s fine. by @hugalocalmicrobe

Books I read all or most of in 2025 that I feel should probably be required reading. Fiction and poetry because I just really liked it. Nonfiction because these are the books people need to read before talking about anything in 2026. The Taschen book because I found the romanticization of California settler-colonialism to be really arresting. I really think we would all benefit from considering books themselves to be valuable not only as passive information machines but as discourse from people who have taken the time to think very critically about their place in the world and shared those ideas with us. The rest of our wild and precious life for loving our friends/making art/feeding our bodies and souls/making the best out of our jobs. Okay that is all. by @hugalocalmicrobe

Imperfect little slideshow of the final art exhibitions this year. Two of them are at Leslie Lohman, one was at NYPL, one was at NY Botanical garden. You can probably decide which was which. I was most humbled and impressed by the map of Azania (slide 5) constructed by Athi-Patra Ruga on cross stitch fabric, which completely breaks my brain. Happy New Year! by @hugalocalmicrobe

i’m inventing a new trend in interior design called finding out that my electric baseboard heater is a hot water baseboard heater and quite safe to be on near my couch. this setup has everything: the super removing melted batteries from your thermostat, freezing while the water takes its sweet time to heat, getting dust all over your clothes as you discover a pipe sticking up out of the floor. anyway these are some figures i drew yesterday they’re alright. by @hugalocalmicrobe
