"Their surfaces act as thresholds. They invite the eye toward texture, then remind us of what the photograph cannot deliver: the sharpness of crystal, the dampness of air, the sound of a mechanism, the risk of falling, the smell of a room, the duration of waiting."

Sofiya Kim (@sofiyakimmmi)'s latest review takes us inside the world of Freja Jiahui Ye (@huifreja) — whose works move between sculpture, installation, performance, sound and writing, remaining "visually inviting while refusing to become entirely comfortable."

In Amor Fati (2021), knitted fabric was transformed through six months of chemical crystallisation until it "began to resemble something mineral rather than textile." The result: a wearable sculpture that is "heavy and sharp" and restricts the performer's movement. "Each gesture has to be found first, weighed, then committed to," Freja says, "because the wrong one draws blood." At the end, the crystal garment was dissolved in water — six months of growth gone within minutes. Freja compares this to the creation of a Tibetan sand mandala, "where the time and discipline involved in making something are inseparable from the decision to destroy it."

In Condensation: A Held Breath (2026), resin cast from an abandoned lamp found in a desert village carries dust and dirt from its original surface. The lamp once allowed women living under curfew to move through the night: "it became connected to the possibility of passage."

In Damp Town (2024), Freja creates a fictional town where dampness "blurs edges, making your skin start to question where 'outside' ends and 'inside' begins."

"The colours and textures attract the eye, but they also point toward weight, decay, restriction and change. The objects look carefully made, yet they do not feel completely controlled."

“What happens when control lets go?”

In our latest interview, London-based multidisciplinary artist Freja Jiahui Ye (@huifreja) explores material transformation, sensory memory, and creating immersive environments through sculpture, sound, and installation.

From growing up amidst the intense humidity of Xiamen and her mother’s chemistry lab to navigating migration across China, the UK, and Germany, Ye discusses how artworks shift, fail, and evolve beyond human control.

𒅒 ALMosT HomE𒅒 Artist Feature #1 temporary exhibition
@huifreja
Freja Jiahui Ye is a multidisciplinary artist who attempts to materialize the immaterial across sculpture, installation, sound, performance, and scenography. She creates immersive spaces where hidden or marginalized narratives can emerge, revealing residues beneath surface structures such as historical sedimentation, unspoken desires, collective anxieties, and latent social fragilities, navigate between fiction and reality. Her practice combines sculptural installation and spatial dramaturgy with material experimentation, chemical processes. Engaging with politics, natural systems, philosophy, and local folklore, she investigates how sensory experience shapes perception and collective memory.

For ALMOST HOME, she will build a site-responsive installation developed on site in response to the space and theme.

'𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘈 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩'
2026 Kitto Art Prize Finalist

Freja Jiahui Ye is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, installation, sound, painting, performance and scenography.

Her practice explores material transformation, migration, identity, memory and belonging, drawing on sensory experiences of her upbringing in Xiamen, China, and her movement between China, the UK and Germany.

Through immersive, site-responsive environments, Ye uses materials, sound and chemical processes to materialise the immaterial, creating poetic and unsettling spaces where memory, bodily experience and the boundaries between fiction and reality converge.

“Almost Home” began as an open call exploring displacement, intimacy and temporary belonging. From nearly 100 submissions by artists across different places, the project has evolved into a shared environment of listening, watching, wandering and gathering.

Alongside programme of experimental film, noise, club music and visuals, this edition expands into a temporary exhibition that unfolds throughout the venue, where moving image, sound and spatial works coexist and overlap.

No fixed route. No single stage. Just fragments that almost feel like home.

Damp town, June 2024, London

It is a site-responsive project that brings together sound, sculpture, and spatial installation as an eerie fictional town seeping with memories and animal presence. Dampness acts as a living force, absorbing, staining, swelling, and decaying as it slowly reshapes the town.

Beside the fountain, a line of words blurred by water vapour whispers an ancient ritual: “Offer a token, and your wish may come true.” Each object offered by visitors carries traces of personal longing, sinking into the muddy water of the well. Yet no one can ever know what has been awakened beneath the surface.

A poignant horror unfolds as fragments of bodies, relics, and forgotten traces haunt the wet walls of the town. Footsteps, breathing, and heartbeats of the more-than-human accompany the space, while skeletal structures and hybrid human forms are suspended within a surreal soundscape between ruin and dream. by @huifreja

Pò(魄), Part of Damp Town, 2024
Marble, Leather, Metal, Bone, Stone, Resin Clay
🐾

Pò is one of the closest things to an inhabitant in Damp Town. A white spine-like form, somewhere between bone, fossil, and something still forming, rises from a four-legged metal body cut through with openings and draped in brown hide. It feels part creature, part relic, as if it has been lying for a long time inside the wet layers of this place and has only just surfaced.

Over six months she let a chemical solution work its way across knitted pieces, shifting the temperature to coax the growth into crystal,

It doesn’t fit the way a wearable piece is supposed to fit. It’s heavy, edges sharp.

By the end, the performer steps into a tank of water and lets the crystal come apart. Everything that grew slowly over six months dissolves in minutes. Nothing is preserved.
