Our Learning & Engagement work centres young people as makers of their own ideas.

Alongside our co-production of Romeo & Juliet with Stratford East, these emerging artists created solo works at Sadler’s Wells East, each shaped by instinct and experience.

Today, we’re sharing @huiscorner . In this solo, movement becomes a quiet act of authorship. Grounded, attentive and full of intention, Yinghui holds the space with focus and clarity, allowing each gesture to unfold on her own terms.

A moment that shows what can grow when young people are trusted to lead. ✨

Here’s how I bring a sense of technique into classes that are heavily choreographed.

Teaching in a conservatoire can be very different from teaching a contemporary class in an open studio. I am not talking about a modern class. Often, the final combination is the climax of the class, with a sequence of warm-up exercises designed to lead up to it. Time is limited, and there may be little or no follow-up with the dancers.

In my day-to-day work, I teach the same dancers two to three times a week over a period of two to three years. That continuity allows me to work differently. I can repeat material, develop ideas over time, and move away from the need to “build up” toward one final phrase.

Instead of centring the class around a single ending combination, I treat every phrase as equally important — including those that traditionally function as warm-up.

This short excerpt comes from the second phrase I’ve been teaching this term. It reflects how I aim to interlink technique with constant movement, without locking dancers into one technical focus at a time — whether that’s turnout, footwork, or upper-back articulation.

Each exercise has a clear intention, but the structure remains open. The goal is technical awareness that supports flow, rather than technique that restricts it.
