✨ Merrie Monarch Monday ✨

Thirteen soloists. One stage in Hilo. A name called late in the night.

At the 63rd Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, Lahela Hoʻokela Medina Maio of Ka Lā ʻŌnohi Mai O Haʻehaʻe, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Tracie & Keawe Lopes of Pūʻahuʻula, Koʻolaupoko, Oʻahu, stepped into the light of Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium for Miss Aloha Hula 2026.

For her hula kahiko she carried the mele “Nānākuli” — oli, kahiko, and ʻauana woven into one night’s offering. When the points were read, her name was called: 2nd runner-up, 3rd Place Miss Aloha Hula, with 1,134 points for her hālau and her kumu.

One dancer on the stage. A whole hālau standing with her. 🌺

From Kalaeloa to Kaʻena, one coast, one song.

In 2023, the kāne of Hālau Kiawekūpono O Ka Ua, under the direction of Kumu Hula Ulukoa Duhaylonsod, brought a "Wes'side Medley" to the ʻauana stage of the 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival: "Holoholo Wes'side," "Ka ʻIlima" and "Kamokila."

"Holoholo Wes'side" travels the landmarks of the Waiʻanae coast, from Kalaeloa to Kaʻena. "Ka ʻIlima" is a tribute to Nettie Tiffany of Lanikūhonua in ʻEwa. "Kamokila" was written for Kamokilakawai Campbell, who named that place Lanikūhonua, where heaven touches the earth.

In matching blue-and-white aloha shirts, the kāne danced their own side of the island home to Hilo, fists raised to the rafters.

More than 40 years on the Merrie Monarch stage, and still bringing new mele to it.

Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima of Kaʻōhao, Oʻahu, led by Kumu Hula Māpuana de Silva, took the 2023 wahine kahiko stage with a full presentation: the oli “Nane Pūniu,” the kaʻi “A Lulu ka ʻIako,” the mele hula “Aloha Waiʻauia,” and the hoʻi “Ō Hoʻokūkū, ō Hoʻonānā.”

Celebrating four years since we were sealed together as a family for all time and eternity at the Lāʻie Temple.

These past four years have reminded me that marriage is a journey of continually learning how to love, forgive, grow, and give grace to one another. It isn’t always easy, and we won’t always get everything right, but what a blessing it is to have someone to walk through it all with.

I’m so grateful for you, for our beautiful family, and for the countless ways Heavenly Father has blessed our lives. I pray we never stop finding reasons to be grateful for one another, choosing love even on the hard days, and remembering the blessings that brought us here.

I love you forever, Kamalei. Happy Temple Anniversary! 🙏🏽🧡✨ by @hulaislife

Precious is the lei held close to the heart.
In 2022, the wāhine of Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leināʻala carried Kauaʻi onto the Merrie Monarch stage with "Hoʻoheno Nō Ka Poli Lauaʻe." Kumu Hula Wahinekeouli Pa composed the mele, and it was published in 1917. It honors Kukuiolono in Kalāheo, the hālau's own home, along with Waimea, Waiʻawa, the singing sands of Nohili, and the cool, misty Ua Noe rain of the lowlands.

Beneath the green of their lei and skirts, each step and each kāhea became an offering of place. The wāhine danced their island's beauty back to it as a lei of the heart. Under Kumu Hula Leināʻala Pavao Jardin, their kahiko earned 1st Place Wahine Kahiko.
Some places are carried in the heart. Some are danced home.

The older I get, the more I realize just how precious it is to find a love that is real. A love that is loyal, patient, intentional, and continues to choose you through every version of yourself.

What my husband and I have is something I’ll never take lightly. We’re not perfect, but our love is genuine. We’ve grown together, walked through different seasons together, and continue to choose one another every single day.

In a world where love can sometimes feel temporary, I’m grateful for the kind that stays, grows, and gets stronger with time. True love is precious. Protect it. Cherish it. Never take it for granted.

I love you in this lifetime and the next @kamaleikawaamusic! 🩵 by @hulaislife
