A dear individual forwarded this photograph to me, sparking a moment of reflection. It was captured 9 years ago of Dr. Lyons and I observing our resilient patient in one of B.C. Children’s Hospital’s operating rooms.

I vividly recall being 5 years old arriving at the understanding that assisting others was a primary purpose of mine in this life; specifically children and the younger generations, as they are the future of our societies. Growing up, I went from hearing of ‘the wars’ to, with the increased globalization and connectivity as the years passed by, witnessing them semi-firsthand.

At BCCH, I conversed with returning colleagues with regard to their efforts with Doctors Without Borders in Yemen. One fellow was in shock, recollecting when a 9 year old boy had walked up to him requesting the removal of a bullet from his shoulder - completely desensitized, as if it is a norm during one’s childhood.

Shortly thereafter, we began embracing children from Syria as well as various parts of the Middle East and Africa. They would share with me their pains: shrapnel wounds, nerve damage, amputations, explosions ringing in their ears, and horrors appearing when they close their eyes to sleep.

Now in 2024, we are witnessing children being incinerated in orphanages and refugee camps from the privilege of our homes and screens. We are witnessing their childhoods being stripped away from them. Locally, in North America, our children are also not receiving the care nor justice they deserve - poor nutrition, negligent healthcare, and chronic abuse.

I have always believed and continue to believe that we will change this negative cyclical reality into a definitive positive one. There are countless admirable, incredible individuals and organizations on the frontlines and behind the scenes who bear the torch of humanity in inspiring ways. I know we will nurture beauty where horror once resided. I know we will catalyze wonder where fear once enveloped. I know we will witness laughter where cries were endless. We will embody the best of humanity each and every day, God-willing.

Once distant echoes of calamity are now loud knocks on our door.

I’m not sure where 30 went... the year flew by just like that.

In my 30th year of life, I found myself constantly engulfed by the (serene) paradox of cycling between surrender and manifestation.

True, divine flow forward requires surrender, but at the same time one wishes to steer towards an envisioned destination... which requires one to be proactive rather than reactive.

Hence, the paradox: How does one find the serene balance to surrender in order to flow truly, but also act with a determined vector towards fulfilling their vision to their desired destination?

Anywho, unc status continues God-willing; onto 31 🥳

Maison HUMAAM (@maisonhumaam) Bespoke Three Piece Suit and Shirt. Cut from our house heavyweight flannel and cotton art deco jacquard cloths, respectively.

The jacket features our signature wide peak lapels, high set gorge, roped shoulders, Milanese lapel buttonhole, pick stitching, barchetta chest pocket, calculated waist suppression, precisely tapered sleeves, 1 button configuration, slanted flap pockets, singular cuff buttons with slanted buttonholes, cloth wrapped buttons, and crescent moon lower quarters. The waistcoat, double-breasted, scooped opening, 6 by 3 button configuration, cut back front closure, besom pockets, and straight cut bottom. The shirt, high-stance, wide spread collar, tall squared collar band, hidden placket, hidden button down, double button closure, and squared triple barrel cuffs. Amongst other details.
