Every spring and summer, shelters see a surge of kittens being born, AKA Kitten Season. 🐱

So what happens when more and more (and more) kittens arrive at HSSV?

Behind the scenes, our teams are constantly balancing a complex equation:
• Do we have foster homes ready?
• Are there veterinary appointments available?
• How many kittens are returning from foster soon?
• Which partner shelters need help transferring animals?

Even when our kennels look empty, space is often already spoken for — what our team calls “the illusion of space.” Every kitten represents a different decision about what care they need and when.

And most of kitten season doesn’t happen inside a shelter at all — it happens in foster homes. Those temporary homes are what allow shelters to keep saying yes to more kittens who need help.

💛 Kitten season works when the community shows up.
That might mean fostering, volunteering, donating, or simply knowing what to do if you find kittens outside.

This is what trust looks like. 💛

Kaya came to HSSV alongside another dog, deeply fearful and shut down around new people. Our Behavior Team, staff, and volunteers gave her exactly what she needed: patience, consistency, compassion, and the space to move at her own pace. Slowly, she began building trust.

She formed a special bond with our Behavior Specialist, Gee, who spent hours with her on pack walks, training sessions, and quiet time in the yard, helping her build confidence and feel safe.

And once Kaya lets you in? She is incredibly loving. The kind of dog who lives for lazy mornings, warm sunbeams, belly rubs, and simply being near her people.

Kaya is looking for someone willing to let the relationship unfold slowly and steadily — someone who understands that trust isn’t built overnight, but through patience, routine, and lots of little moments over time. She may not become your best friend on day one. But for the person willing to meet her where she is, Kaya has the potential to become a deeply devoted companion.

Now thriving in a loving foster home, Kaya is ready for a calm, understanding home where she can continue growing in confidence and finally settle in.

Some of the most meaningful acts of animal care happen quietly, often before the day even begins.

This National Feral Cat Day, we’re celebrating three HSSV team members who are making a lasting difference in our community, one cat at a time.

🐾 Sophie, TNR Specialist, knows that helping community cats takes patience, persistence, and plenty of late nights. She works alongside community trappers and feeders to humanely trap cats, provide access to spay/neuter services, and prevent future litters from being born outdoors. Her dedication is so strong that she once spent an entire year trying to trap a single cat on HSSV’s campus — and she eventually succeeded!

🐾 Ellie, Community Services Associate, discovered the importance of TNR after seeing the community cat overpopulation crisis firsthand. Now, she and Sophie are working together at a local recycling yard, where they’ve already TNR’d 18 adult cats and brought eight kittens into HSSV’s care. One especially meaningful milestone? Helping a young momma cat who had been repeatedly getting pregnant finally get spayed, giving her the chance to live a healthier life without more litters.

🐾 Dynell, Animal Care & Enrichment Technician, has spent years caring for the community cats on HSSV’s campus. Through daily feedings, fresh water, and endless patience, she’s built trust with cats who once kept their distance. Some took months, or even years, to accept her touch. Today, she knows their personalities, routines, and quirks, reminding us that every cat deserves compassion, wherever they call home.

Together, Sophie, Ellie, and Dynell represent the dedication it takes to truly support community cats. TNR helps prevent future litters, while the dedicated teams who feed, trap, and care for these cats help them live healthier lives.

HUGE thank you to the incredible volunteers who helped make our soon-to-be-new dog adoption floor a little cozier! 🛏️🐶💛

Volunteers from @adobe, @abbottglobal, and HSSV’s Community Engagement and Animal Care & Enrichment teams came together to assemble all 28 Kuranda beds needed for our new dog condos.

During his time at HSSV, Osgard received dedicated care and support from our Behavior and Animal Care & Enrichment teams as he gradually acclimated to life in the shelter.

After finding a loving home, we were so happy to hear how he’s settling in with his adopter!

“We renamed Osgard Oscar. He hid for the first three hours, but when he emerged, he explored every room in the house. He selected my sister’s room as his own and spends most of his days and nights there.

He loves the cat tree and enjoys sitting on the top perch or looking out the windows and sliding door.

Oscar is usually mellow, affectionate, and curious. He loves sleeping on our beds next to us. He lets us know when he wants to be fed, petted, or left alone. Oscar is a welcome addition to our family.” 🖤
