Meet Chunlu Yang, a third-year PhD student at ASU in the Family and Human Development program at the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics. (@asusanfordschool).

She is also a member of the SSFD Awards & Scholarship Committee. 🔱

Reflecting on her experience in the Harnessing AI for Good? Lab (Spring 2026), she tells us:

"My research interests center around children's empathy and parenting, and how new technologies interact with that.

We created an AI-powered resource for parents and educators that provides evidence-informed guidance on children's prosocial development.

What made this project especially meaningful was realizing that AI can serve as a bridge between developmental research and everyday parenting practices.

The Lab is much more than learning how to use AI tools. It encourages students to think critically about the ethical and social responsibilities that come with designing technology."

Meet Courtney, a junior at ASU majoring in Human Systems Engineering (@asuEngineering). 🔱

Reflecting on her experience in the Harnessing AI for Good? Humanities Lab (Spring 2026), she tells us:

"I was motivated to join Harnessing AI For Good? because diving deeper into the negative effects of AI and algorithms felt meaningful to me. Additionally, I liked the idea of taking a discussion-based course with students from diverse majors and degree types.

My favorite experience during the lab was hearing from the guest speakers. We heard a wide range of perspectives from professionals in the AI world, many of whose entire job is to think about AI and the outcomes surrounding its growth.

Every discussion offered many perspectives, which in turn introduced many ideas.

One civic virtue I further developed during the lab was open mindedness."

Through the Humanities Lab’s Beyond the Lab program, ASU students spent the semester creating an empathy-focused handbook for student organizations—a resource designed to help clubs spark meaningful conversations, strengthen connections and foster a deeper sense of belonging across campus. 🫶

Join us for a student showcase organized by students from the “Accessible Urban Farming" Lab in the Humanities Lab at Arizona State University, in partnership with @asu.farm . This event, hosted on the west patio of Durham Hall, will explore how improving accessibility and equity in local food systems—through urban farming, school gardens, and community farms—can transform community health, sustainability, and overall quality of life.

Explore student work, learn how to plant your own seed through a hands-on experience, and reconnect with nature.

Meet Sophia Wood, a senior at ASU majoring in Pre-Law Philosophy, with minors in Transborder Studies and Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, and a certificate in Human Rights. Wood is also the past president of the American Sign Language Club at ASU. 🔱

Reflecting on her experience in Growing BioDiverse Cultures Lab (Fall 2025), she tells us—

"My favorite experience working in the [Growing BioDiverse Cultures] lab was learning from my classmates and professors! Because everyone had such diverse and extensive backgrounds, I was always learning something new -- even if it wasn't related to agrobiodiversity.

My team created personal relationships with the organization we collaborated with, which is named EMPWR.

Whether I continue into law school or graduate programs, I now have experience building trust and ethical procedures with collaborators and community members.

…The Lab is much more than a credit hour or a grade. There are so many important connections you can form, from your classmates to your professors and ASU faculty."

Curious about how urban farming can be accessible in its fullest sense — across visible and invisible barriers?

This spring take a deep dive with the Humanities Lab’s Accessible Urban Farming course. Students will investigate issues of accessibility, equity and access within local food communities, urban farming and school gardens and experience the value of being connected to non human life.

Discover how (non)access to healthy, fresh and local food impacts the quality of life for you and your broader community.

Through field trips, volunteering, and hands-on projects, students examine how access to fresh and healthy food shapes everyday life and community wellbeing.

This course takes place on Mondays from 1:30 PM - 4:15 PM at Walton Center for Planetary Health, WCPH 409
