Exploring people past prejudices & stereotypes. Discovering diversity through dialogue & conversation with human books. #UnjudgeSomeone #HumanLibrary
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week Ben headed out as a volunteer ‘book’ with the Human Library to discuss Satanism and addiction recovery at the Wine and Spirit Education Trust and the City Lit Festival of Mental Wealth.

The @humanlibraryuk is a not for profit learning platform that hosts conversations designed to challenge stigma and stereotypes, where topics are discussed openly between our human ‘books’ and their readers.

Ben has been a ‘book’ with the Human Library for the past 8 years. To find out more about the Human Library visit: humanlibrary.org. taken in Raven Records by @humanlibraryuk

Experience a Human Library 16 Aug in Edinburgh where questions and curiosity are welcome and the chance to unjudge people based upon the boxes we normally put them into.

The Books may or may not have Sex Work experience, that could be the conversation or anything but the conversation as you discover other things. Some of the Books are drawn from that experience and some are not, how will you know? Many of our other Human Library Books with diverse lived experiences will be present too across Migration, Neurodiversity, LGBTQ, Ethnicity, Mental Health, Disability, Faith, Social Status and more.

Each conversation lasts up to 30 minutes and you can borrow several "Books" within the event or just pop in for one. You can't take them home though!

In association with Scotland for Decrim, Arika, Edinburgh Art Festival, and the Human Library® Organisation

Gallery 2, Custom Lane, 1 Customs Wharf, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 6AL, 10-12, Sunday 16 August

EAF26 Event Spotlight: Tell Me About It: A Hard Labour Human Library Event

Tell Me About It creates a space for direct one-to-one conversations with people who habitually find others (filmmakers, politicians, journalists) speaking on their behalf…

A variation of the Human Library where members of the public – “readers” – can hold direct one on one conversations with people in the role of “books” who will share part of their life story.

Created in partnership between Scotland for Decrim (@scotland4decrim), Arika (@00arika00), EAF, and the Human Library Organization (@humlibedinburgh), the project brings together a diverse collection of Books reflecting the many realities, identities and experiences that exist within sex work. Rather than presenting a single narrative, Tell Me About It invites readers to encounter the richness and complexity of peoples’ lives through respectful conversation, challenging assumptions and sharing space for greater understanding.

⏰ 10am–12noon
📆 Sun 16 Aug
📍@custom_lane

Hard labour will also take place from 21–23 Aug in Glasgow featuring workshops, talks, and visual art.

📖👀 How do I become a Reader at the Human Library and where can I find events in my area?

The Human Library has events all over the world, through our Depots and Publishing Partners, we host events for everyone to join as a Reader.

📍 Currently, we have Depots in Australia, the US, Germany, Switzerland, the UK and Denmark.

If you are not close to the Depots, we have Publishing Partners who are licensed and trained by the Human Library. We usually partner with local institutions and organizations. To organize, you need to apply via our website, humanlibrary.org. The link for becoming a Publishing Partner can be found in our bio.

Through the Human Library Online platform, you can read Books anywhere and choose the Title you’re interested in. Here, you can #UnjudgeSomeone from all over the world. 🗺

💻 Every month, we host a Public Online Reader’s Corner on Zoom. As a Reader, you’ll join a small group in a reading room, meet a Human Book, and take part in two 30-minute conversations. The event is 2 hours total.

Interested in coming to an event, but unsure if there's one in your area? You can always reach out to us, and we can guide you further. 💬🧡

🧐📚 What is the Human Library?

In the Human Library, you read Human Books through open Dialogue. Our Books are people who in some way may have experienced judgement or assumptions due to their differences or experiences. 💬 📖

Reading a Book means asking questions to discover more about their title, in this library we offer a safe space where you are free to ask any question you want.

As Readers in the Human Library, you are invited to explore your assumptions about other people - it's what we call #unjudgesomeone. 🌟

This Saturday, we'll be featuring the Human Library at the second Norwich Book Festival. These Human Library conversation experiences allow you the opportunity to take out a Human Book for 30-minutes and have a comfortable dialogue about sometimes uncomfortable topics. Bring your courage and curiosity to our tables in the Forum Gallery.

We are open for conversations from 12-4pm, last reading around 3.30pm

Our Human Books are drawn from groups in society that are stigmatised or stereotyped, marginalised, mistreated, or misunderstood, from race to religion or refugees, disability to discrimination, LGBT to mental health, and more. Come along and have a chat with a Book (all questions are welcome without judgement) or just chat to us about the concept and perhaps get involved.

"The Human Library publishes people as open books to explore stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue." - Ronni Abergel, founder (Denmark, 2000)

We are actively seeking new Books (and Librarians) in #London, #Dublin, #Netherlands, #Switzerland, #Scotland, #Midlands, for upcoming events – get involved via our website or DM with questions or for a direct link to sign up.
