Descartes wanted to know what he could be certain of, so he doubted everything: his senses, even whether he was awake. The one thing he couldn’t doubt was that he was doubting. Hence “I think, therefore I am.”

Anne Carson reminds us it begins with dubito: I doubt.

Doubting is an important part of HumanSense, and so is interrogating that doubt with better questions. That’s something we’ll all need to get better at as we rely more on AI for answers. 🙏🏻

Wouldn’t it be better if we all got along?

Epistemic humility doesn’t exactly jump out in everyday thought or conversation. But if we all had it, ‘recognising that our own knowledge is limited, fallible and incomplete’, we’d all be far better off.

Imagine how we could solve problems if we all came at them with that same intellectual virtue.

So many don’t consider AI ‘their problem.’ I first encountered Large Language Models back in 2022 when ChatGPT first emerged. It was incredible what it could do but also very clear it made lots of mistakes. But the frontier models of today are VERY DIFFERENT, they are so much more advanced and relied on across the world.

It’s not Sci-fi nonsense, it is a real concern if left unchecked. We’re already seeing young people’s job openings diminish and it’s unclear what the future holds.
