Hey choreographers! Have you ever rented venue space to present your work? Probably. Most of us have. Do venue rentals take a huge chunk of your production budget? Sounds familiar. Have you ever questioned the practice of self-production? Hmm. If you answered yes to any of these questions AND you live (at least part of the year) in NYC or the SF Bay Area, we'd love your presence at our next ChoreoTALK: A generative virtual discussion about self-production. Sunday September 27th, 2026. 4-6pm (EST), 1-3pm (PST). Join us and help us devise a more plentiful future for dance makers. Please RSVP to humanshakes@gmail.com. A zoom link for the gathering will be sent to you afterwards. #trhs by @humanshakesdance

Attention SF Bay Area and NYC choreographers! You are invited to our inaugural ChoreoTalk! Sunday April 12th 1-3pm (PST) 4-6pm (EST).

This conversation will bring choreographers and/or company representatives from the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City together to discuss the self production model and what its strengths and weaknesses are. We will brainstorm how we might steer away from "space rentals" and more towards mutually beneficial agreements that center the work of artists and fully share production and promotional costs or make it easier for artists to be produced. Open to choreographers in any stage of their careers and in any genre who have a history of self production that either partially or fully facilitates their artistic output. RSVP to humanshakes@gmail.com by April 11th. Zoom link will be provided. For more info follow us here and find us on the web at humanshakes.com

Friends! We are in need of some amazing individuals like you to join our board of directors. Our current board members are some of the most committed and generous people ever. However, we are all wearing too many hats. Now is a wonderful time to hop on board with us!-No pun intended. Your membership will not only support us but also the many artists we plan to lift up with our future festivals and advocacy.

We hold board meetings six (6) times per calendar year every other month. Meetings take place mostly virtually and last between sixty and ninety minutes. Board members also support the organization by completing small administrative tasks when needed and by donating financially either in cash or in-kind.

Board members can live anywhere in the United States but it is helpful if they spend a meaningful part of each year in either the San Francisco Bay Area or the New York City metro region.

Serving on a non-profit board looks great on a resumé. It gives you the chance to apply your skills to keep the performing arts healthy by supporting an organization committed to artistry, public engagement, and advocacy. We also have a lot of fun!

If any of this has piqued your interest, please send an email to humanshakes@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you.

Big news friends! We are shifting our priorities and our organizational identity. Read our announcement here from our AD Tim Rubel @trubel1

"Beginning this year, we will no longer operate as a choreographer-led dance company. Instead, our organization will support choreographers by producing an annual dance festival of commissioned artists who rarely receive or have never received substantial commissions for their work. We will also create an advocacy hub to help make the relationship between choreographers and the venues we present our work in more equitable and partnership driven. We will continue to produce and nurture my choreographic work, but my name will no longer be in our title and we will not endeavor to sustain a core company of dancers. Instead, dancers will be employed on a project basis. Finally, Human Shakes will not only be based in San Francisco but also in New York City, which will give us the opportunity to support artists and be supported on both U.S. coasts. We will continue to create and produce work that is unapologetically queer with the highest artistic and ethical standards possible.

Our target date for the first festival of commissioned work is the spring or summer of 2027. We will keep you updated and please keep a look out for more information and ways you can engage with us.

Thank you to every artist who has made TRHS what it is these last 14 years. Thank you to every supporter who has given us your patronage or shared your resources with us. We look forward to staying connected with you on this next iteration".

With love and care,
Tim
