Maximilian Runge-Segelhorst is verified by HUMAVE. Maximilian studied philosophy before entering the financial sector through an apprenticeship at a bank. In early 2022, he became self-employed as a financial philosopher. Today, he works as an insurance broker and fee-based advisor for ethical investments. Or captions full of words like journey, passion and next level? We read dozens of them every day, and honestly, we can’t remember a single one an hour later. Your clients feel the same. The good news: the fix is simple and costs nothing. Write the way you talk. Tell people about the client who called you on a Sunday because the print file was wrong, and how you fixed it anyway. Mention the coffee that went cold while you were stuck on a logo. Those little details make people stop scrolling, because they can tell there’s someone real on the other side. 2. Hiding the person behind your work We talk to a lot of freelancers, and many of them keep themselves out of their own feed. Only finished projects, no face, no name, no story. We get it. Showing yourself feels uncomfortable, and it’s easy to think the work should speak for itself. But right now, a portfolio without a person behind it raises one quiet question: did anyone actually make this? You don’t need to become an influencer to answer it. A photo of your desk on a busy day. A short video of your hands at work. One sentence about why you dropped the first idea. Small things, but they tell people exactly who they’d be working with. 3. Competing on speed and price We’ve all been there. A client asks if it could be a bit faster, a bit cheaper, maybe done by Friday. And you say yes, because you don’t want to lose the job. The problem is that speed and price are a race without a finish line. There will always be someone who delivers quicker and charges less. What they can’t offer is you: the questions you ask before you start, the honest no when an idea won’t work, the fact that you pick up the phone when something goes wrong. Johanna Voss draws stories. Children’s picture books, illustrated tales and free illustrations. A unicorn carrying a book. A tiger under an umbrella.
