When a child needs permission to call their father, the message received is rarely subtle. It tells the child that dad is a privilege, not a right. It tells the child that expressing love for him carries risk, that asking to see him might upset someone, that the safest path is silence.

Children are remarkably perceptive. They read these dynamics long before they have language to describe them, and they adiust their behavior to avoid the tension. often at the cost of the relationship itself.

This pattern has a name in the research literature: parental alienation. It describes the systematic undermining of a child's relationship with one parent frequently without any evidence of that parent being unfit or unsafe.

It is recognized increasingly as a form of psychological harm to the child, not a private family dispute to be shrugged off as "just how the divorce went."

Family courts have historically struggled to identify and respond to this pattern, particularly when it targets fathers. Custody frameworks and cultural assumptions have long treated maternal gatekeeping as protective by default, rarely questioning whether the protection being offered is warranted or whether it is simply control dressed up as caution,

Divorce dissolves a marriage. It does not dissolve a father. Yet in practice, one parent often retains disproportionate control over whether, when, and how a child accesses the other. and children absorb the emotional cost of that imbalance for years.

Fathers who experience this describe a particular grief that rarely gets acknowledged. They are not absent by choice. They are locked out by design, watching their children grow through a filtered, permission-based version of a relationship that should never have needed filtering.

Every child deserves unconditional access to both parents' love, without needing anyone's permission to receive it. Family courts, custody frameworks, and cultural attitudes need to catch up to that basic truth: a child should never have to ask if it's okay to love their dad (or mom). by @humiliati
