As one of the very fortunate who benefited from last second decisions (let’s grab breakfast before you check into Marriot at WTC at 8:15am) & after witnessing the personal carnage of jumpers at WTC 1 burning for 45 mins above me 1/2 a block away - then deciding to walk back to find and notify my colleague I was ok and we had a problem with the conference starting at 9:30am & therefore avoiding the collapse by minutes & meters - do take a moment to read and think. The trauma was real. It was our generations JKF assassination moment & that day and subsequent days and years changed those directly and indirectly affected and all our lives profoundly. On the 2nd night after “survivors drinks” in the Soho Grand bar I made it down to “The Pile” - Ground Zero to try to retrieve my bags at the adjacent hotel at Versey street and found myself volunteering to hand out water to the rescue teams with the harsh smell of burning in the back of my throat and piercing stadium, lights, illuminating, an otherwise pitch black downtown Manhattan with all power disconnected. I walked past fire engines, ambulances and police cars, sliced in half by falling steel and stacked on top of each other no more than 2 m high like out of some Transformers movie. I made it out with my bags and still have the thick powdery dust and a Business card which was all that survived as everything else was pulverized. The business card was from an executive at a Japanese bank on the 89th floor of Tower one - I emailed him the next day wondering if he had survived & about 10 days later he wrote that he had made it out (many of his colleagues hadn’t) from his office, miraculously down to ground level before the tower had collapsed. I’ve never met him, but I was happy to hear of a personal survivor whilst we went around Times Square, looking for people‘s names and photographs of survivors who would never be found.
So take a breath and raise a glass & the never forget and enjoy your days, your moments, friends and families as life can change in very unexpected ways in the blink of an eye. by @hun007
