RANT - Some idiot at the Wall Street Journal recently complained about illustration being ‘mistaken’ for art. It is my, and many others’, belief that, after the ruination of fine art training by the abstract school (which, interestingly, was funded and championed by the CIA as a countermeasure to soviet art- Google it!), the last bastion of actual fine art skill is those who are trained and work in illustration. The majority of the finest art of the past hundred years is to be found within the realm of ‘illustration’ and not ‘fine art’.

Here’s a few great examples of books showcasing some incredible work of 20th century illustrators. First up is Dirty Donny Must Be Destroyed, a new release from @idwpublishing that showcases the incredible work of Donny Giles and second is the harder-to-find Black Light collection of L.B. Cole's comic covers from @fantagraphics. Both these artists are more relevant and have more to say about 20th century culture than any amount of paint splattered on a canvas by a violent alcoholic. Ahem…not mentioning any names.

Also, Roy Lichtenstein can get f*cked.

Peace and Love

We did a thing! Many thanks to Matthew @publishersgroupuk for facilitating uk distribution rights for PushWagner’s masterwork of sequential art ‘Soft City’. We enquired as to why it wasn’t available in the UK and a few phone calls later a UK license was sorted from @nyrcomics . This mostly silent work of insanely detailed scribbles presents a wonderfully 1960s view of a dystopian future which seems somewhat cute compared to the AI hellscape we now find ourselves in. An epic piece of alt comics history in a giant hardcover, available now

The Star Wars Library, Volume 1 from Taschen. Available to order now. Contains the first three years of Marvel Star Wars comics in an xxl format, beautifully restored on thick matte pages. Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin’s original run on Star Wars is absolutely splendid, from a time before and during Star Wars rise to cultural phenomenon, this series really ran with the premise and ended up doing some wild and whacky things with the IP. A magnificent and absolutely ginormous book, a great addition to any OG Star Wars fan’s library. Also, there’s a rabbit man.

DM for pricing and order enquiries

RIP Tatjana Wood, comics colorist, wife of the illustrator Wally Wood, who has passed away at age 99.

Her work on Alan Moore's Swamp Thing is the best colour work in the history of comics, imho.
