When travelling in Japan and staying at different hotels I realised something… their hair dryers are different (in the best way). So lightweight and quiet and the way they leave your hair feeling soft and moisturised. Nothing like what I’d been using back home.

I discovered Refa has a hairdryer that’s compatible for international use, you just need an adapter. I also got my hands on their straighter because my 15 year old GHD was due for an upgrade.

Best decision ever @refa_mtg

What I got -

Beauties dryer smart (international model) 40,000 yen
Straight iron pro 29,700
Premium Ion care brush 8,500 yen

So many places you can find Refa in Tokyo. I went to Isetan in Shinjuku to purchase mine ✨ taken in Shinjuku Tokyo,Japan (日本东京,新宿) by @hungrygeisha

My favourite ryokan stay to date @umehibiki

This ryokan is located near Fukuoka in an onsen town called Hita in Oita prefecture. We travelled here from Hakata station by train however you can get a bus.

This ryokan is located on a ume farm and they have a brewery on site where they make a variety of umeshu. The gift store has a wide selection of umeshu and Umeboshi you can buy as well as other snacks and food items.

They have a few different rooms however we went with 203 for the onsen and view of the mountains. Breakfast and dinner is included in your stay so you really don’t have to worry about a single thing while your staying there.

One thing I do want to mention is staff spoke little English. If you’re travelling here and you don’t speak Japanese you might struggle but you can always use a translation app or try to learn some basics before you go 😊

I’ll be sharing more content about this ryokan soon as I loved it so much and I’ll be posting a more in depth video on YouTube.

Wagashi workshop in sydney @japanese_popups_sydney

There’s a Japanese craft pop-up at @chillhubmq in Macquarie Park, where you can learn how to make nerikiri! After enjoying a few nerikiri on my Japan trips I’ve always been curious how to make them. Nerikiri is a traditional Japanese sweet shaped by hand to reflect the changing seasons and flowers.

The workshops run once a month, and the next one is 5th December at Macquarie Park!

Kuro goma dofu ✨

I tried it for the first time as an appetiser at dinner while staying at ryokan in Izu and I never forgot it. You can make it with white sesame too!

Ingredients

* 90g kuzu starch
* 90g black sesame paste
* 500ml water
* pinch of salt
* optional: 20–25g sugar if you want it sweet

1. Add water then kuzu to pot. Whisk to dissolve the kuzu fully in the cold water first before turning on the heat.
2. Whisk in black sesame paste, pinch of salt and sugar if using.
3. Cook over medium to low heat stirring constantly. It should take about 8-10 minutes to start to thicken and turn glossy. Once its turned into a thick mass, keep cooking for another 2 mins.
4. Pour into a wetted mold, smooth the top and press a sheet of cling wrap on top to stop it skinning over.
5. Chill until fully set, minimum 3 hours but overnight is best.
6. Slice into your preferred shape/size. Keep refrigerated. Best eaten within 3 days.

Serve with wasabi, grated ginger, soy sauce or a sweet miso sauce.

Sweet miso sauce

Ingredients:

* 40 g white miso
* 1 tbsp mirin
* 1 tbsp sugar
* 1 tbsp dashi
* 1 tbsp sake

1. Add all ingredients to a small pot on low heat. Whisk until smooth and sugar has dissolved and its turned into a glossy thick sauce.
2. Take off heat and cool at room temp before spooning over the chilled goma tofu.
3. Keep in fridge. by @hungrygeisha

The hair benefits are just a bonus.

Comment “SESAME” and i’ll send you the recipe.

Black sesame’s been a staple in Chinese medicine for hair health for centuries. Packed with iron, calcium and magnesium that are all key for hair growth and strength.

In TCM specifically, black sesame is used to nourish the “blood” and kidney essence, which is tied to preventing premature greying and thinning hair.

These black sesame snaps are sweet, nutty, crunchy and ADDICTIVE.

Fully optional to dip these in white chocolate. yes I know it adds zero nutritional value, no it’s not necessary ok these are delicious completely plain. but sometimes you want a treat treat. Not a white chocolate person? milk or dark works beautifully too. by @hungrygeisha

3 years ago I started collecting Japanese ceramics. During my trips in Japan I noticed the plating at different place we ate and how they complemented what I was eating. From the different shapes, colours, designs and textures.

It seems like something small, but eating of something beautiful makes an average Tuesday feel a little more special.

When I came across this Japanese ceramics store in Sydney I hate to go check it out. Even when I’m not in Japan I’m always thinking what to add to my collection next.

@seifuu_creations sources from different kilns all across Japan. All of their pieces feel considered and unique. As well as ceramics, they also sell Japanese cookware, cutlery and glassware like the toyo-sasaki hs usurai tumblers I got. If you’re looking for a special gift for someone, especially coming up to the holiday season this is a great place to check out.

If you’re not in Sydney, they also have an online store.

something about spring has me craving a parfait

I always admire the parfaits in Japan, it’s a full art form. matcha and strawberry is perfect for spring. topped it with @mochi.ice.aus mochi ice cream (cut in half so it’s easier to spoon). their new tea collection comes in 3 flavours - matcha, hojicha and genmaicha and it’s available at coles.

the layers, bottom to top:
— matcha kanten
— matcha cream (whipped cream + matcha powder + vanilla, sweetened to taste)
— granola
— matcha cream
— vanilla cream (whipped cream + vanilla, sweetened to taste)
— topped with fresh strawberries, shiratama dango, sweet red bean and the mochi ice creams

Matcha kanten recipe:

* 500ml water
* 4g kanten (agar) powder (about 1½ tsp)
* 2–3 tbsp sugar, or to taste
* 1½–2 tsp matcha powder, sifted

Method:
1. Whisk the matcha with a splash of hot water into a smooth paste (no clumps) and set aside.
2. In a saucepan, whisk the kanten powder and sugar into the water before heating. This stops the agar clumping.
3. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, then simmer for 1–2 minutes until fully dissolved.
4. Remove from heat and whisk in the matcha paste until smooth.
5. Pour into a shallow dish and let cool to room temp, then refrigerate 30–60 minutes until set.
6. Cut into small cubes

Black sesame nama chocoloate ✨🖤

*** recipe pinned in the comments***

I’ve been fixated with nama chocolate lately and I can’t stop experimenting with flavours like corn. yes corn. and it’s DELICIOUS 🌽🌽🌽

This black sesame version is divine. If you loveeee black sesame, I think you will really like this. The texture is so satisfying to eat! I love it straight out of the fridge when it’s firm.

A few things before you make it: black sesame paste can be hard to find at your regular supermarket. Head to a japanese or asian grocery store. and please don’t sub black tahini, it’s too runny and oily and your chocolate won’t set properly. you need a thicker, drier paste 🙏

So many more flavours coming. by @hungrygeisha

All my favourite things in one bowl 🥣 toro ssam bap - fatty tuna, scrambled eggs, caviar with the option the add uni (do it). I’m feeling inspired to make something similar at home. The uni and toro is rich but balances well with the rice and scrambled eggs.

@jejunoodlebar is located in the West Village in NY. It can be difficult to get a booking but we were lucky to get a last minute cancellation on resy. Unfortunately this is not in Sydney! 😓 taken in New York City by @hungrygeisha
