If the last twelve months have belonged to any one artist in Aotearoa, it must surely be Hun Lynch. Hun (Hannah) Lynch (Pakeha, Fiji, Samoa) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans theatre, film, and writing. Her compositions have featured across stage and screen, as well being a regular fixture on the likes of RNZ, 95bFM, and NTS.

Her feature film acting debut Mum I’m Alien Pregnant recently premiered at Sundance to elated applause, and she was introduced to the world at large as a musician to be taken seriously via Neil Finn’s Infinity Sessions streaming show series. Finally, in April of this year, Hun Lynch’s first full-length sonic tapestry ‘Sycophant’, with a very special one-off album celebration just announced at Tāmaki Makaurau’s new musical haven Kāhui St David’s.

A self-recorded and produced kind of “aural cinema”, Sycophant was mixed by mixed by acclaimed engineer Paddy Hill at Roundhead, and arrived through Noa Records. Hun Lynch wades reflective tides on Sycophant, distilling her expansive creative vocabulary into a sound as theatrical and poetic as it is intimate.

Joining Hun Lynch on the grand Kāhui St David's stage will be an all-star band; Navakatoa Tekela-Pule (LEAO) is on guitars, Tiare Kelly (Erny Belle) on synths and SP404, De Stevens (Marlin's Dreaming) joins on bass, and Hamish Morgan (Marlin's Dreaming) behind the drums and electronics, with Roundhead’s chief in command Paddy Hill on live mix FX.

Further evidence that this will be no ordinary gig is the hand-picked opening act; a theatrical solo clown performance from Sean Dioneda Rivera. ‘Our Own Private Rapture’ is Sean’s search for the divine ecstatic (the dynamic sublime) amidst the mundanity of daily life. A priest becomes the clown, rock star, bouffon, storyteller, fool, and counsellor in these 7-15 minutes sent from heaven.

Its been about a month since I released my debut album sycophant. I couldn’t tell you how I feel really. It’s been a beautiful exercise in exorcising shame, austerity and punishment. It’s a gift to get to try really hard publicly. Everything grows. Thank you for engaging and for your awhi. Tell me what song you like

Gigs coming soon, going to make up for the lateness of the release gig with how fearsom it will be.
Also gonna start a community choir at my house next month if anyone wants to just sing together, sometimes you need to be alone and sometimes you don’t!!!

Ok, this album SYCOPHANT is out now

This took me ages guys, I’ve been so patient.
I made it entirely at our house over a period of a few years.

Most of it is about the immense confusion of this life and the desperation to find a good way to do it! Called it Sycophant for many reasons but in brief it’s joyfully pointing to the self betrayal that we are all undergoing to keep this machine ticking along! Fluctuating between feelings of grandiosity and insignificance! All the turmoil of playing a part in the current world! Thinking about it all the time! Touching wood when you think of anything cos it’s chaos out there and it’s chaos in here too!

It’s also an expression of devotion to my family, my friends and everyone I know and don’t know.
