Saw this lovely spot in Brighton, MA today and just have to talk about it & it’s relevance to @strong_towns
Would really appreciate if you take the time to look/read through. 😁

The first image shows a shared use path between housing. In most cases this are would either have been a street with motor vehicles using more space and making it less safe, or these yards would have been separated by fences, keeping the community more separate and increasing travel times for people walking or using micro transportation. This mixed use path is a great use of space to improve the livability of the location.

The second image shows a bike path. Boston has been doing a great job introducing more bike infrastructure, and while separating the bike paths from vehicular traffic with a physical barrier would be much safer, these painted bicycle lanes are at least a step in the right direction. Would recommend checking out the YouTube channel Not Just Bikes if you are interested in understanding the importance of alternative methods for travel besides cars in our communities.

The third image is of a one way street. It may not seem important, but one way streets are much safer for people both in and out of cars. The safer and easier walking increases the number of trips taken without a car to nearby locations such as the grocery store. Any trip taken by any method that isn’t a car saves the city money, helps the environment, and makes for less traffic for those who do need to drive.

The last pictures are of a nice pedestrianized area outside of some apartments. With lots of greenery, seating, and with safe, quiet streets nearby, this area makes for a great third place for people to relax and congregate. There are many economic, cultural, and safety related benefits to designing areas with mixed uses and safe infrastructure such as this, but it is unfortunately illegal to design like this in most of modern America. This is something that we need to change moving into the future.
