Some very satisfying impacts, but I nearly came last…

My positional shooting needs a LOT of work, I’ve got plenty to learn, and this weekend showed me exactly where I need to improve.

But what a weekend!

My first ever @precisionrifleseries_uk match at the @mdttac21 MDT Summer Series and I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the sport. Absolutely loved it from start to finish.

Massive thank you to @precisionriflejoe for the tuition and advice throughout the weekend. I learned a ridiculous amount from him, and I was genuinely humbled by his incredibly kind gesture at the awards ceremony. Something I won’t forget.

Special mention to Noah Smith and his dad too, top junior competitor and both absolute salt of the earth guys. It was a pleasure meeting you both again.

@ollie_on_target what a guy, really showed me the ropes!

One of the biggest things I took away from the weekend was just how welcoming the PRS community is. I turned up as the new guy, knowing very little about what to expect, never even shot from a barricade! But the people couldn’t have been more helpful. Advice, encouragement, letting me borrow and try their kit, nothing was too much trouble.

If you’re watching this thinking about giving PRS a go, just sign up.

You don’t need to be an amazing positional shooter. You don’t need to own every bit of kit. And you definitely don’t need to worry about looking like a beginner, I was one.

If anyone is considering their first match and wants to know what to expect, what to bring, or has any questions at all, drop me a message. I’m obviously no expert, but I can tell you exactly what it’s like turning up to your first one as a complete newcomer.

Came away with a massive list of things to work on, a serious PRS addiction… and genuinely some friends for life.

Cannot wait for the next one.

Building confidence at distance.

Ranging targets and building dope for a new load.

Hitting steel at the breathtaking Eskdalemuir range in Scotland with @gardnersgunsrifleranges. Second visit and many more to come.

There’s no better feeling than ranging a target and hearing the steel ring using ammunition you’ve loaded yourself.

MDT Midsummer Mayhem. My first ever PRS match.

Replaying stages in my head. Positions. Decisions. Where to improve.

Slow and steady. Build consistency. String the impacts together and the speed will come.

On to the next goal. The next match.

Steel ringing…

I’m building my confidence progressively towards 800m, so today I concentrated on 500, 600 and 700m. With some seriously challenging winds up in the Scottish mountains, it was a great opportunity to practise my holds at distance.

A big lesson today. A strong wind felt at the firing point isn’t necessarily the wind reaching the target. Still, some very satisfying impacts were made.

Still learning. Still improving.

I made 4 X PRS upgrades…

After shooting my first @precisionrifleseries_uk match a few weeks ago, I came away with plenty to work on, and some great tips and tricks to hopefully shave those all important seconds off my stages.

So, I’ve made 4 upgrades to the rifle ready for round two…

1. MDT SEND IT Level Gen2
Taking my eye away from the glass to check cant on a bubble level was costing me time and concentration. This should massively help me stay on target while knowing the rifle is level.

2. MDT CRUSH IT Stage Timer
Being able to see exactly how much time I’ve got left should really help me learn my limits, manage a stage better and stay calm under pressure.

3. Turret Tape
Simple one, but potentially a big time saver. Preparing my turret for each stage and clearly seeing where I need to dial between targets should help massively with both speed and focus.

4. MDT CKYE-POD Gen3 Single Pull
This thing feels the absolute business. Seriously impressed with the quality and adjustability already. My previous bipod was good, but I just wasn’t getting the reach and versatility I needed at my first match. Can’t wait to put this one to work.

My 2nd PRS Match…

Progress made, plenty learned, and a brief glimpse into what it’s like to compete in PRS in some seriously challenging weather.

Day 1 proved particularly tough for me, and was a huge learning curve when it came to reading strong winds and dealing with everything the British and Welsh weather can throw at us, especially whilst I’m still learning stability on stage props.

This weekend’s finale brings the @precisionrifleseries_uk season to a close, and I’m already thinking about how I can improve, build on what I’ve learned, and come back stronger next year.

PRS is addictive. It demands an incredible amount of skill to compete at a high level, and every match makes me even more determined to develop those skills and continue progressing on my precision rifle journey.

The UK series is extremely lucky to have the very talented @mrstheryancharlton capturing moments of us doing what we all love. Thanks for the fantastic photos, Annie! 🩶

PRS upgrades continue…

At my first @precisionrifleseries_uk match, I learnt a hell of a lot from the more experienced shooters.

One simple tip was keeping the stage brief right in my eyeline with a dope card holder. Target order, distances and everything I need without wasting precious seconds trying to remember the stage.

This particular trick came from @lofty.prs Cheap, simple and seriously useful. Cheers for the tip mate.

Hopefully a few more vital seconds saved on the clock.

PRS UK Tactical Division…

At my first ever PRS match I gained plenty of experience from these guys and they’ve definitely filled me with confidence that my choice of cartridge, the old .308, is still competing at the very highest level in PRS.

My favourite stage of the weekend…

“Fast Air Support”, probably no coincidence that it was my personal best.

I’ve cut and sped the footage up because, truthfully, I didn’t manage to finish a single stage within the time all weekend! But stringing a few impacts together under the clock is one hell of a feeling.

Plenty learned from this one.

Next improvement, a better electronic level to help control rifle cant under pressure (cheers Joe mate!). Hopefully that’ll help shave a few seconds off.

And I NEED more weight in the fore-end. Shooting .308 in PRS, anything I can do to improve recoil control and stay on target is going to help.

Best way to learn? Exactly what @precisionrifleseries_uk told me, just jump right in.

I learned a TON over the weekend.
