DOUBLE EAR-TAGGED CHOCOLATE PHASE BLACKBEAR!

This one is special.

When my friend Matt Woodward told me about this black bear hunt they do every year in the mountains of eastern Arizona, he described it as “an elk hunt for bear” and “the funnest and toughest black bear hunt you’ll ever do.” For some, that might steer them away. For me, being a bit of an adventure junkie and always up for a challenge (or, being the glutton for punishment that I am!) I vowed to one day do that hunt.

10+ years later I finally found myself in camp with @diamondoutfitters_zof ready to chase bear around some of the most famous elk mountains in the country.

I quickly found out that Matt’s descriptions were spot on! This wasn’t your typical bear hunt. This was wall tents, long-glassing all day, spot and stalk-style and felt way more like an elk hunt than a bear hunt. In fact, we were seeing way more elk than bear!

On day one, several people in camp were tagged out. By day 4 I was the last one left. But, it wasn’t for lack of trying! My guide @marshall.prater.96 and I (and videographer @monty_cain) ground it out every day. Up and down mountains through thick stuff that cuts and pokes.

We were seeing bears, just not ones that we could make a play on.

Finally, on the last morning, it all came together. We found a big, chocolate bear that was in a position that a shot was possible. After a bit of cat and mouse, my 7mm Backcountry did its job and all our hard work has paid off.

Then, the surprise came! Not only did it have the most beautiful thick chocolate coat, the bear had TWO ear tags! Each tag a mark given by the authorities when it had been removed and relocated because it was causing problems with humans or property or both. TWICE! It was the first time anyone has taken a double tagged bear with Diamond, ever!

This bear was estimated to be around 20 years old or older.

A very unique bear on a very unique hunt and a freezer full of yummy bear meat! Life is good!

Reach out to my friends at @diamondoutfitters_zof if you want to try this for yourself!

Thank you to all the folks who made this happen.

Land of the Giants!

I may have been hunting for bear in Arizona, but that didn’t stop me from drooling over the bull elk we were glassing up!

Cade(10) is on his first “real” bow hunt! Y’all wish him luck!🍀 He has been practicing all summer and he’s shooting really well. Loading the quiver up with actual broadheads for the first time is big deal for a hunter! I know it was for me. I carved out a couple trails between these bedding areas and threw down some @antlerking1 “no sweat” for a kill plot after forestry mulching this area. I tried to control as much as I could to get these deer in close. It’s been consistently putting deer broadside in front of his stand sub 20 yards. This buck and a couple others have been coming by the @spartan_camera I set up pretty regular. It’s a little hot today out but it’s just good to be in the woods together. I’ll let yall know how it goes!!
